PostPosted: 13:52 - 05 Jan 2011    Post subject: Cheap GPS from Ebay Reply with quote

Just received my new GPS unit that I ordered the night before last from ebay. It's a car GPS so it's not waterproof, but I refuse to pay over £100 for a basic sat nav thats waterproof.

I've had a good look around it and from what I can see, everything is A OK. It's packed full of features, some of which will never be used, but it's nice to have them!

5" screen with a really nice crisp picture and a very nice, useable touch screen.

128mb RAM and a just under 500Mhz processor

Ability to watch vids/listen to music (including during navigation), reads text docs, and all the usual shit, claculator, currency converter etc. etc.

Comes with iGO 8.3 preloaded and a choice of maps is available when you buy. Also has windows CE as a base so you are also able to read word documents/powerpoint presentations/excel docs etc. Windows seems to be largely in chinese as default, so i'll have to find a language pack and find exactly how to install and change it. It's useable as it is, certain things are in english as well and the icons make things simple enough. but definitely an issue until i can install/change language. iGO is brilliant, it comes with full voice navigation and a choice of voices for it, also has Text-To-Speech so it'll read out the road you need to turn on to, as well as telling you which turn it is.

has a stereo headphone jack which is VERY helpful on a bike.
There's also a built in mic but i'm not exactly sure why

Supports 3D maps but the particular buyer i bought from didn't include 3D's, just 2D. I reckon they'll be able for a sly download somewhere though.

4GB internal memory with a Transflash (Micro SD) slot capable of taking up to 16GB cards

It's accurate enough to distinguish between rooms in my house. Looking at my location on it, you can tell that i'm in my bedroom at the back of the house.

Speed camera / speed limit warnings included. All adjustable

Mini USB 2.0 port for charging and data transfer

Ships with the usual 12v car lighter socket charger as well as a wall charger (THIS IS A EUROPEAN PLUG, not perfect but no real hassle if you've got a converter plug)

The suction cup mount seems very strong. I think I might get away with attatching it to my tank, as long as the spot is clean.

From what I've seen so far, it seems like a brilliant bargain, with 90% the functionality of the top end, multiple hundred quid sat navs... and a bigger screen! I'll let you all know how it stands up reliability / quality wise but it feels as well built as any.

Best till last... it's £60 delivered.

Crikey, that does look good. 5" screen is actually too big for me though - I just chuck my crappy old weenie screenie one in my pocket, pop an over-ear earphone inside the helmet and listen to Nagging Nora telling me where to go. It's a bit like having the wife in the car, only she doesn't tell me to stop and ask for directions every 5 minutes.

Not a major issue but battery life is a bit low.

I only paid £50 for my Tomtom and I think there was one on ebuyer for around the same price.

Tomtom definitely has bluetooth although the screen is rubbish in sunlight. I need to find a better way of mounting it.

Not sure I would trust it to be honest. But hey I'm wrong lots of times.

My reasons are the seller has all his auctions private, so you don't know what other people have been buying and their feedback.

No mention of postcodes, which I would use and not sure how you would attach to a bike.

I use my car's TomTom and I got a mount from Ram USA. Work's fine for me.

Hope its good, please give feedback on here.

2D map, I couldn't handle that. I would have to change the software (if possible)

It comes with iGO 8. Which is MUCH better than tomtom software. the 2D maps included are the same as what are used by most navigation brands. 3D maps are available from other sellers too. Yeah i've used it and it was brilliant. absolutely excellent i seriously can't fault it as far as navigation goes. It did suck onto my tank but i wouldn't trust that alone, so i taped it on as well Wink i'll be utilising some string as a backup to catch her if she falls. Yes you can use it with gloves on really easily, it's just as good as using your finger, i found. Due to the larger screen, icons are bigger and a piece of piss to hit. I've still got the plastic on the touchscreen and it was no problem at all, so it can only get better.

Issues i've uncovered:

Finding language packs for CE6.0 is like trying to get blood from a stone (and help would be appreciated muchy muchy)

This one, as i've just checked, WAS meant to have bluetooth but doesn't seem to (although it might just be hidden somewhere) but i havent found it. (the advert i posted was just one from the same seller, he's got loads of adverts up for the same thing, just different prices etc. some slightly differing specs.

That's it to be honest. It came bundled with a lot of samsung advert material, so i'm presuming it's a samsung base. (almost every unbranded electronic item these days is actually identical to a branded device of some variety)

Positives I can verify:

Directions work
Turn by turn Voice Nav works
3D buildings modelling works
POI info works, including phone numbers
Route calculation is quick as fuck
speed cams and speed limit warnings work
FM transmitter works (even without headphones plugged in)
Battery seems to last quite nicely even with full backlight setting (not that it'll make much difference)
Touchscreen works excellently with gloves
Transflash(microSD) card slot works
Headphone jack works
Games work (including mandatory tetris Wink )
GPS acquisition is pretty swift, too.

Aside from not having the bluetooth it was advertised with (i'm not gonna bother chasing it up as it doesn't make much difference, i'll just mention it in the feedback) and the chinese CE setting (which also doesn't make MUCH difference tbh, as it's nothing to do with 99% of the device functionality), everything is fine. I'm over the moon with the actual GPS abilities of it.

I'm still yet to test the lane guidance, only been for a very short ride to a friend's house.

That looks really good. A picture of it set up on your bike would be great Thumbs Up

So the iGO 8 system is better than a TomTom you say? Obviously the most important thing about a Sat Nav is the maps... if it is I'm very interested in buying one for that price!

It says it includes a map of Europe, did you get that with yours too?

Also, it has English as a language option. Why can't you get yours in English?

Cheers,
Steven

The sat nav software is separate from the windows installation. Anything except the actual installation of windows, is all in perfect english.

The maps are a choice thing....

*goes off and searches for foreign countries on his new toy...*

FUCK ME I'VE GOT EUROPE AS WELL!!! sweeeeeet. I think you either get:

1. Europe

2. Americas

3. Austrailia / New Zealand / China etc.

Just checked and yes, postcode search is supported and working.

I'm confused, so what maps does it use? That's the most important thing!

When you order it, they load the maps onto it depending on what you want. You can have any one of those 3.

Although I'd imagine the rest of the world maps would be available for download from somewhere if you look hard enough

I have wisepilot installed on my phone, stuff it in my pocket and use headphones for voice directions. helps to have a huge high cap battery on the old blackberry, but the satnav app works well enough.

what you think peeps

Note the fact that it has: a QUARTER of the RAM, a 50% smaller processor, a 4.3 inch screen, only a gig internal memory, it mentions nothing about having speed cameras, speed limits, lane guidance, a headphone jack or bluetooth, it's the same price once delivered, it's refurbished and it's not exactly sendable backable if it's not what you wanted coz it's from america. and the seller has shit feedback. 98.6% with that amount of sales is quite bad.

I'd rather mine

Tried just suction cupping it to the tank, but it's not convenient coz when you park you have to find somewhere to put not only the sat nav but the mount as well and I don't trust it. I spent every second of riding with an eye on it, which isn't safe.

Sooooo....

I've made myself a simple and effective mount. I'm chuffed with it. Used the top half of the suction cup mount and basically bolted it to a pedalbike speedo bracket that fits around the handlebar. couple of washers here and there and it's excellent.

Threw a zippy tie in there as well, just for the extra peace of mind.

Gonna have to re-think my strategy when I come to fit it on the GPZ though

If it's got an FM transmitter you could tune it to something like a Scala rider FM bluetooth helmet kit and use it to listen to the instructions
