Hi! Hand

I've got a similar problem - I've never been in Outer Space, yet I worry about how to clean my visor when I am up there? Anyone got any advice? Thinking

When you buy a bike, buy a Haynes service manual for that bike.

There is a wealth of valuable information in a manual, including how to change oil and what oil to use, how to adjust your chain tension, all other basic servicing etc.

Get some paraffin (£5 for 4L in B+Q - sold as lamp fuel), use this with a rag and a soft toothbrush to clean your chain, then use a paintbrush and some engine oil to lube it afterwards.

There are a host of 'special' chain lubes for sale, engine oil is probably the most widely used and is exceptionally cheap (especially if it has already been used in the engine!).

can I use some used motorcycle engine oil to lube the chain ?? or should I buy halfords' chain wax or some WD40?

the chain is not new and it is starting to show sign of rust (just a bit)

how can I make the chain work for a bit more ? only done 8000km....

nothing wrong with it at the moment btw apart from starting the rust attack

Yes, could do and no, on the basis that WD40 may eat the o-rings. The former is, of course, free.

I though it was the same thing on motorbikes...

if I will go and buy car gearbox oil then I think its cheaper buying proper chain wax right?

I just wanted to know the cheapest way to lubricate the chain....I'm keep looking in the forum and dont find any answer yet....

Cheapest way is to use the stuff from the oil change. Get a paintbrush, paint it on.

The disadvantage with using oil rather than a dedicated chain lube is that it's quite thin, so you don't want to put too much on, and you'll need to reapply it pretty regularly. It'll fling as well, so might make your rear wheel a bit grubby. As far as I can tell, any oil (within reason!) will work for chains, subject to the fling/reapplication points.

On the upside, you've already paid for oil from the oil change it so it's costing you nowt!

2 strokes need gearbox oil, the gearbox in most (and I stand to be corrected!) 4 strokes is lubricated with the engine oil.
