I had a quiet day at work today so I used a few bits of scrap material from my bench and knocked up a Lean-o-meter, it probably won't get used much, or be that accurate, I just did it because I can Laughing

First thing I did was print off a protractor and find a suitable piece of plastic, in hindsight the piece I chose was a little too flexible, leading to some bending when tightening the nuts and bolts. Next I scored the plastic with a compass and then cut it out and neatened it up:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000139_zpscfc8d9ff.jpg

Next I considered the best way to make the pointer, after digging through my draw I came across one of these:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000140_zps4a331e3b.jpg

The bar and eye seemed perfect, but the threaded part wasn't long enough, I've known the theory of using a die for a while but never put it into practice, so this was a good a time as any to learn:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000142_zps7d9cf82e.jpg

Next I fount a perfect piece of thin aluminium for the pointer, it was a fraction too big for the eye so I filed it down by a small amount. This picture also shows the new thread on the bolt. The following picture shows the original bolt for comparison.
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000143_zps5fce83d8.jpg
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_0001411_zps8ed5441d.jpg

Next I started thinking about the ballast, I found an off-cut of aluminium diamond plate which I thought may do the trick, I cut the plate in two as it was a little over size for the job:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000144_zpsd8778e7e.jpg

Next I drew up a template for the measurements based on the protractor:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000146_zps41be58cd.jpg

Then I marked up the plastic with a sharpie, drilled a hole in the ballast and bolted it all together:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000147_zps4b888ed5.jpg
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000148_zpsef2336ae.jpg

Lastly I added a stand so it could be mounted to the bike:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000155_zpsae374490.jpg
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000156_zps26301bad.jpg

Added a spirit level, just because:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000157_zps490273a2.jpg

And mounted it to the bike:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/WP_000158_zps90f85aaf.jpg

It was tested on the way home, it didn't move much so I think the ballast needs rethinking, and possibly the method of mounting the pointer too. Mark 1.1 will follow when I have another quiet day.

Please feel free to add suggestions.

I wouldn't expect it to move much regardless of how much ballast you have - any lean would be counteracted by centrifugal (centripetal? Can never remember) force.

Stick it in a brown box, leave on neighbour's doorstep with note reading 'please deliver to next door'.

That makes a lot of sense, I was wondering why it would lean when not moving but not on the go.

Because of wind pushing the thing and causing too much friction.

Also I think because of the way I attached the ballast that as the weight turns around the shaft part of it will be higher than the shaft meaning it is acting against itself if that makes sense?

It's the same reason you don't fall off your bike when cornering. The force of gravity is being countered by the centrifugal force which acts straight down through the bike pushing you into the seat, and keeping the needle reading 0 degrees lean.

Perhaps a gyro might make it feasible. But you would probably just be better sticking two bits of plastic on the bottom of your pegs and seeing how much wears off them, then use that to calculate your max lean angle.

Why not get one of those parking proximity sensors and glue them to the side of your bike?

You can simply listen to the squawks or look at the lights which show to see how much you're leaning.

Pfft, apps and tech are boring, this was creative and involved power tools. I like power tools.

I think I have another solution. It involves Ribena, the vacuum forming machine and some sealant glue. Stay tuned for mark 1.1 (in a couple of weeks).

If it involves gravity to align your "ribena level", it isn't going to work.

To think of it another way, your bike doesn't run out of fuel when you go round corners. The fuel stays at the bottom of the tank for the same reason that the bike doesn't fall over and you don't fall off.

Nope, it relies on centrifugal force to work.

Buy this, step up your voltage to 28V and Bob's your uncle.

Made a start on it today. Windex does not work as the fluid Laughing Machining coolant seemed much better and there is a barrel of used stuff sitting in the workshop so that shall be the fluid of choice.

I think this one may actually work Mr. Green

Laughing Laughing

You need a gyro or something to reference the ground. You can't use ballast in this application.

It's ok, this time I'm not using a ballast, or at least not intentionally. I think because of the way I want to set it up the liquid can't act as a ballast. Of course if it does then it wont work again.

Unless you are rewriting the laws of physics, this isn't possible without either a gyroscope or a device that references the ground either mechanically or electronically.

I get that physically the forces will act on the liquid but think it will still point at the correct bit. It's a bit trial and error but I'm happy enough spending my spare time fiddling with it to see if I can make it work.

I'm sure I could work it out scientifically but that takes the fun out of it!

Been dead since around October, the gearbox got too bad to keep riding it amongst other smaller things, wasn't worth spending the money on fixing it back up.

Top attempt, but.... if it was this easy you should work for Bosch, their lean angle sensor is a pretty expensive piece of kit....

This would only work if the bikes standing still and leaning. If your actually in a lean and turning the centrifugal force will cause the need to move back towards zero.

Lean is related to G force. The iphone apps use the GPS to estimate the G force in your turn hence lean angle.
