Moly grease will be fine.
I use copper grease on mine. Just a thin skimming so it doesn't get into the bearings. Nothing should be turning on the spindle anyway, the grease is there to stop it seizing, not for lubrication.
You get stuck spindles quite a lot. I think it's due to differing metal corrosion where the steel spindle passes through the alloy of the hub or an alloy calliper bracket. The alloy corrodes slightly and the hole becomes narrowed by white furry aluminium oxide. Worth giving this a clean out too with some emery paper or wire wool. A smear of grease will help prevent this recurring. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Thanks for all your help guys.
I've managed to take the rear wheel off now.
Just need to get to those brakes tomorrow.
I've made a short youtube clip of my work.
Please comment with suggestions...
Cheers...

Not too sure about the way you pull the axle out at the end - top points for using something that won't damage the axle but hitting it that way puts a little stress on the bearing as you're knocking the axle sideways. Also, you don't need a rubber mallet for hitting the wood, a lump hammer might be better. A piece of hardwood wouldn't fall apart as easily either. The best way in this instance would probably be to use a slide hammer, or a long drift from the other side, (exhaust permitting). That's a minute point tho.
This bit about lifting the wheel to get the axle centralised for removal, what I've done before to free both hands is to use a bottle jack at the front of the bike to lean it back until the weight is taken off the wheel.
Next tip - clean the bloomin thing |
