1 person - RW alignment, urgent :p

I need some help. Im doing the rear wheel alignment. When I done it earlyer this month, I had somone to hold the bike up, so I could check the wheels were straight with a pole.

I dont have any one that can hold it today, so its on axle stands and center stand - but I cant check if its right.

Tomorrow I have a long journey (140 miles, crawley->folksone, and back) so need it to work.

When turning the wheel, there is a chain *clicking* noise from the front sprocket. gets worse with the alignment but doesnt seem to go away fully when its right.


Also last night the headlamp blew again (5th bulb since november). hoping it wont do any more as I put some orings on to take out vibration



any ideas?

I've always just matched the wheel to the marks on the swingarm, never had any problems.

there's little notches on the swing arm which you even up,basic stuff tbh

Why are you checking it every month?

The clicking could be due to too much slack, the chain too tight and even a tight spot in the chain.

Last time I had clicking from my chain at the front sprocket, the chain snapped soon after!

I would not like this to happen! the reson is the chain, sprockets, and bolts are all NEW. one month old.
I also dont want to damage the gearbox bearings any more than they are :p so I need this right before I ride it.

If you did it a month ago when fitting the new c/s. Then just go by the turns on the adjusters.
Although after a month, the chain should not need adjusting unless you are not lubing it often enough.

140 miles should be nothing.

I think I would be more worried about the bulb going than the chain....

When i put new chain and sprockets on my wee Gs i was having to adjust it VERY regularly. I bought a cheap set that wasn't D.I.D so i imagine thats why.

The set on the 350 though, i've had it for 8 months and done near enough 5k miles on it. I've not even had to touch the chain, although i might do soon. Its probably worth mentioning i have lubed this one more than my 125 but even so thats still fairly good going

The markings on the adjusters on my CBF1000 are way out. I certainly can't rely on them on my bike.

The way I did it was to measure the distance from the inside of the swing arm to the wheel rim on both sides of the wheel and check they were equal. I turned the wheel 1/4 turn and checked another couple of times just in case the rim wasn't perfect.

Mine has always clicked when rotating the wheel - worse when sat on the bike and not so noticeable when on the centre stand. I've had it checked out by various places and they've checked alignment, tension, chain tight spots, sprockets, front sprocket shaft bearings etc. The only conclusion is that it is the chain against the swing arm slider that's making the the noise. It's done it for the last 16,000 miles. It's never got any worse nor any better.

So, its done. Ive test ridden it, and it seems fine now.

There is a slight click from the gearbox sprocket, but its not a loud one. The alignment is not perfect, but not far off....

Next week ill take it in to a garage. I noticed the brake cam has a lot of axial movement in use! (1-2mm!! for 45* of rotation?!)

And I did have a helper :p


Anyway, we adjusted the chain, with the wheel on the floor. pushed bike around to move the wheel into place.

but after tightening up the spindle its all moved :/ I guess this happened last time but didnt notice.

so we adjusted it again, with the spindle still tight (72ft/lbs) then I decided the adjusters need to be locked, so added a second, m6 nyloc nuts...

Check the Chain slack when somebody is actually sitting on the bike, when you sit on the bike the chain gets tighter

I would want to know what the clicking noise is, I'm always very wary of strange noises as they can be shortly followed by catastrophic failure If the wheel is moving when you tighten it up, it might be missing a washer somewhere. Have a look in the diagram in the parts manual and make sure you have all spacers/washers and they they're in the right place.

The surest way to measure wheel allignment is to measure from the swingarm pivt bolt to the axle. I usualy just measure from the front of the axle slot to the axle itself. As mentioned, you can't always rely on the adjuster marks but you can allign the wheel accurately and then make your own marks to use in the future. Measuring between the wheel rim and swingarm on both sides won't cut it as a lot of swingarms aren't symetrical. Only the wheel has to be central.

The clicking noise is most likely the front sprocket being worn - the sprocket teeth take on a "ninja-death star" style shape!
