 |

Hi all
I currently have a Honda XR 125L and i'm looking to sell as i want to get a better 125. I currently don't have the money to upgrade to a much larger bike and do A2 test (i'm 19) so guess im stuck with the old 125's
The Honda is a '03 plate and in pretty good condition. There is rust on parts of the frame which i will sand down, put rust prevention products on then give it a paint, also replacing my dodgy indicators and getting a new front left side fairing as this got damaged when i was involved in a hit and run (idiots)
Anyhow i can post pictures if people want to check it out as anyones opinion on its worth would be great
As i would sell this i need to start looking for a nice, but not too expensive 125
Not sure as to get a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? My Honda is a 4 but i've heard that these low engined 2 stroke bikes can 'blow up' as such.
Would be nice to see what other people on here have (any sized bike) so post pictures up if you like

Do your test on your XR, £15 for mod 1 and £75 for mod 2 > get new bike > be happy
There are plenty of cheap to buy, cheap to insure big cc bikes out there; GPZ, SV, Bandit etc...It really isnt worth changing over to a 'better' 125 ____________________ 2008 CBF125 [Sold] >>> 2003 SV650s [Killed] >>> 2002 CB500/'98 748 >>> 1998 GSXR600 >>> 2009 Street Triple |

Autotrader suggests you could possibly get around a grand for your XR.
Sell that, and with it you could probably do your test, get a bigger bike and be well on the way to affording insurance.
Edit: Whore my bike you say? Of course I shall oblige.

Agreed. You don't need any training to do a test, and the cost is less than what you'll spend getting a "better" 125 - whatever you mean by that.
Man up, get it done, and you'll have a lot more bikes available to you.
Also, be very careful about spending money on a bike you're planning to sell. You're unlikely to get back the full outlay back, once you've made it minimally roadworthy. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Rider Training on your own bike shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred quid. Ball-Park, £25 a two hour lesson, about half a dozen usually enough.
£4-500 is DAS money! Your talking to the wrong schools.
You make no sense what-so ever suggesting you cant afford a new bike, then suggesting you are going to flog your XR so you cant afford to buy something else?!?!?!
Just do it on the XR.... get it over and done with, and if you cant afford another bike, then live with the XR.. if you cant afford THAT theyn you really ought to question the economics of affording a bike at all!
After test, PLENTY of machines you could go for IF you want and IF you can afford them, and many of them re a hell of a lot better and often no more expensive than a 125.
As for whoring the bikes... well I' must be an ultra whore, mine have thier own pages on my webby! See sig! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I've enquired to a number of school but they all range between £400-£500 which i though was alot of money. Thats why i wasn't sure to do it or not.
Also nice bikes everyone, whats a good sized bike to get to progress from a 125? Or is any okay as 125 is the biggest bikes i've been on?

If you book the tests via the DVLA website, without the training schools those are your costs. You shouldnt really need a lesson for MOD1 tbh if you've been riding beforehand. I did my MOD2 with 2 lessons, they cost £45 each with my bike for half a days tuition.
I gave a few examples of the popular first bikes, all of which are brilliant to learn on. Unfortunatley for us young'uns insurance will put an end to getting a sportsbike (r6, gixxer etc) So look at things like the GPZ500/600, SV650, Bandit, Fazers, Hornets etc etc loads of stuff to chose from!
Photo whoring? ooooh ok

You don't need to pay for any training. The DSA have plenty of videos on youtube about the tests, the Highway Code can be read for free online, and you can book it all via the DSA's web site.
£31 for theory, £15.50 for mod 1, £75 for mod 2. Just get it done. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

No you dont NEED to pay for training, but for MOST its usually very worth while.
Going it alone, you learn the hard way, which can take a long time, and hurt. Also doesn't necesserily teach you how to do it 'right' or give you the helpful little 'hints' as to what test examiners are going to be looking for. Learning by doing, can work, but re-doing Tests at £75 a pop to find out how to do it can prove rather expensive. ONE re-test fee is three hours of road-training.
Two re-tests will cost you a full road training course with a 90% first time pass rate......
You don't NEED to have training....... but its the smart thing to do.
It gets you doing stuff 'right' from the start, gives you the inside line on how to pass a test, as well as how to ride safe, rather than finding out by falling off, AND long term can prove just as cheap if not cheaper.
Provided you get the right school, and the right course. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Well, fair enough, some people learn better under instruction.
Alternatively, you can splash out £8.44 on a copy of Motorcycle Roadcraft.
Also, blagging an assessed IAM or RoSPA ride might help. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Yeah, you've mentioned that particular tomb a few times Roger....
You know, I could buy an awful lot of books about ballet..... read them, absorb them and try to uderstand them, but it wouldnt make me a dancer!
Motorcycling is a dynamic art, not a science, its all about feel, and there are NO prescriptions for how to do it, let alone how to do it well.
Road-craft, is a very good attempt at proceduralising riding and offering a 'prescription' on how to ride, but if you take it litterally you are missing the point.
Good start, but its an AWFUL long way from the be-all and end all of good riding....
Even its most ardent exponents struggle to 'prove' a lot of stuff is even practical, let alone the 'best' way to do something... like the cardinton clog dance at a set of traffic lights....
It worked for you Roger, because you an empirical accademic, you learn by reading, then prove or disprove what you read by trying it.
And you are a confirmed 'rebel' who doesn't respond well to authority, and continually seeks to challenge it...
As your constant suggestions to challenge speeding tickets or peopled endorsements for blatently breaking the law on 'technicalities'....
Your also a tight arse scot, and resent giving people money...
I'm not sure which is the bigger influence here ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Well, you forgot my crippling Oedipal complex, but that's a pretty decent assessment.
And as you noted, a good instructor - rather than someone who's talked themselves into believing that they must be good at it because they do it for a living - is a rare and precious thing.
Anyway, you may be reading a bit much into my advocacy of Roadcraft. I don't agree with all of it. In this instance, I suggest that it will give helpful general suggestions about the kind of riding that examiners would like to see on a test.
You can pick that up from an £8.44 book, or you can pay someone a lot more than that to vent their opinion in your ear. In the end though, you're the one sitting the test so you need to be good enough while not under instruction. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Having owned a 2, I would say get a 4 for it being cheaper to run.
Boring, but since you haven't ridden a 2 stroke, stick with the 4. ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

No, I didn't.....I just think that far too many psycologists put too much store in Freud, and try to over intelectualise and de-naturalise basic instinct....
The male desire to bury ones self in, and attach ones self to nicely formed female mamory glands is entirely natural, and in no way indicative of an abhorent sexual desire towards ones mother, nor should it be stretched to some deep seated insecurity suggesting a desire to return to the womb..... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
