Just started commuting on my 125 and not realised how many miles I have been doing and ran out of petrol on the way home last week, put it on reserve and got my way to a petrol station and filled up, on my way to work today going up a hill in a 50 and I start losing power and it eventually cuts out on me, I put it on reserve once again and got to the petrol station but my tank was nearly full (as expected), could it be linked to the running out of petrol last week? Thanks

If I was being cruel I would merely answer with "I don't think so." and leave it at that.

I'm fairly certain that your issues are not related to running out of fuel last week unless there is some sort of blockage in the fuel line. It would be worth us knowing what sort of bike it is before we can make further diagnosis...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It's a Yamaha Sr 125 W Reg, rang up local garage and he seems to think that if it hasn't been ran low on petrol for a while (it hasn't) then it could have been a build up of bits of muck which has caused a brief blockage and if it does it again to give it a clean out?

Putting the bike on reserve your still using the same carb so if it didnt run on normal tap then reserve position shouldnt make any difference unless there is a blockage in the tap!!!!!.
sometimes weird things like this happen and if cleaning the carb/s isnt a problem then its a good thing to do but if your not familiar with the job it can cause huge problems.
I would run the bike a bit and see if the offending bit of shit that cause the problem has been flushed out already and take it from there

Was going to keep it running and hope that offending bit has been flushed out, I was going up the hill and was losing power from 45mph and i managed to get to the top of the hill and it started back up straight away

May I also add that when the engine cut out on me and I started it up again first time it didn't have any problems for the rest of the journey on normal tap position

Classic symptoms of a blocked tank breather. Next time it happens open the fuel cap and see if it runs well right away. You might hear it take a big gulp of air when you open the cap.

Ride home was fine, if anything seemed alot quicker when pulling back the throttle (yes I know it's only a 125), but seemed as if some of the shit has gone

Sorry to be a pain again, but once again on the ride to work today I started losing power from around 45 mph, I was still going but on full throttle I was doing 40, it just felt as if I had half the amount of power, so could this have been more rubbish in the carbs? I turned off the engine left it 5 seconds started it up again and I got to work easy no problems

Is there any chance of all the rubbish passing through over time, or is it best to get it looked at?

You might have rusty water in there from condensation or worse rain getting in.
This is to be expected with a rather old bike like this - TLC needed.

Check & see if the plug is oiled up & if you have the standard air filter check how oiley it is , clean & re'oil , on the Sr I had it needed doing quite often

Clean the carb & fit an inline fuel filter Neutral

Before you start pulling the carb apart, check the fuel tap.

As your local bike shop correctly said, running to the bottom of the tank if it hasn't been on reserve for a while can lead to a load of crud getting into the tap and filter.

If it were me, I'd check this first. Either drain the tank or take it off and lay it on its side at an angle so the fuel is away from the outlet. Remove the tap and give it a good clean out.

Some taps can be dismantled. In which case, do so and rinse the bits in fresh fuel. Some can't be dismantled in which case the best bet is to give it a good rinse in fuel and blow compressed air back through the tap with it in both positions.

If you get a load of crud out, try it back on and see how it goes. If it is muck in the fuel system, you'd most likely see a load of it stuck in the guaze filter on the fuel tap.

If it's still cutting out after that, take the carb apart and clean it out.

No point stripping the carb if there is still a load of rubbish gumming up the tap, it'll just run in and foul the carb again.

Worthwhile fitting an inline fuel filter to prevent any rubbish getting into the carb again once you've cleaned the tap out. Then if the same thing happens again, you know it is only a blocked tap or a blocked filter, the filter will stop muck getting as far as the carb. Paper element fuel filters are best, if not particularly pretty.

This type:

EDIT: Also worth having a good look at the inside of the tank with a torch for signs of rust, muck and water. If present, drain the tank and give it a good flush out with fresh fuel while the tap is off.
