Best battery?

My RSV is a bit of a battery whore, the current one is ok-ish, but want to put a new one in.

They bike takes alot of power to crank it, and apparently they like to kill the (very expensive) clutch if made to crank without enough power.

The battery is currently dying less than a week from full charge, and want something to give me a bit more peice of mind, so don't mind paying a bit extra.

It currently has a (standard) YTX-12-BS, but apparently the YTX-14BS fits, and has a bit more of a kick to it.

I don't know much about batteries or electonics, so if someone would like to educate me, I'd be happy to listen! I try to keep the bike on the optimate as much as possible, but sometimes forget, and it's a pain when it won't go!

Anyone got any makes or types to reccommend? This one looks cool (cos it's yellow) but don't know if's better or not?

If it's only lasting a week you sure it's charging properly when out & about?

I'm in the same boat with the TDM it goes through one a year. I went for Gel battery see if they are any better.

No idea but have you checked your alternator, rectifier, and nuetral switches etc...

I meant to say a week of not being used. It's fine when it's used, but I forgot the optimate last week and it wouldn't start this morning...would rather have a battery which lasts a little longer off charge!

Odyssey batteries are the very best. Glass mat absorbtion batteries.

That said, a bike sat by itself shouldn't be discharging that far. Could well be a duff battery but you might want to check there isn't an earth leak somewhere.

Get your multimeter. First off, set it to measure 10A current (you usually need to connect the leads to a different socket for the 10A circuit). Make sure everything is turned OFF, including the ignition or you could fry your meter. Now disconnect the battery positive and attach one probe to the battery positive and the other to the wire.

It should be reading zero. Anything more than 0.5A, do NOT go onto the next stage, you have a huge amount of earth leakage and need to find out where.

Now do the same test on the 500mA setting. Anything more than say 5mA is on the high side (and that would be with an alarm fitted).

An note of caution, if you're using the 500mA setting and ANYTHING electrical other than the alarm in rest mode activates, your meter will fry. That includes the alarm "pinging".

I'm using the motobatt, has better performance than my yuasa and only a few quid more.

Some duc riders also fit heavier gauge cables to the starter and to earth.

The best batteries without spending millions are gel batteries.

Have a look on wemoto, they will normally have a gel battery as an option. Not to expensive either, around £50 maybe?

I managed to get an Odyssey for £60 + carriage from Electroquest (via eBay) in October 2008, great battery, loads of cranking amps, starts well every time even in these extreme negative temperatures we've been experiencing.

Im a big fan of Gel batteries also, I fitted one to my Hayabusa after the previous one would manage to start the bike once every four hours, any more than that and it would just chug! Vaarta were highly recommended at the time but were pricey!

As far as the RSV and its battery problems go its best to look at the posts on the RSV forum about where the current goes etc!

On my XJ 750 I put a Lucas maintenance free battery.

I originally bought it for my old GPZ but then stole it and put it on the XJ when the battery went on that and I noticed it was the same type. It has been through two longish periods of sitting outside on the bike and off the bike and it still works nicely. I do have an Optimate but only use it to give it a good charge every few months or if I haven't been using the bike much. I don't leave it plugged in to maintain.

It was about £60 as I managed to get it at trade price. I'm guessing you would be paying over £100 retail, so may as well try the Odyssey out if you are prepared to pay that much.
