I'm not very mechancally minded and you will be able to tell that due to my silky soft hands.

But I decided to check my engine oil on my Honda Lead 110. I checked it and kind of decided there only seems to be a small thimblefull in there so let me top it up.

So after wiping off the dip stick, i kept pouring and pouring. I couldn't see a min or max indicator so just poured it until it was halfway up the dipstick. This was last nite.

I was proud and told my friend how good a mechanic i was.

Anyway, this morning, I start it up and its ticking along nicely and i notice that its not picking up as well as it used to but i think that its just what happens when you put more oil in.

Same thing happens on the way home. So i get home and decide to check the owners manual and read that its just the first inch that i need to top up to.

So i get home and start to try undo the bolt that i think is to drain the oil........ no wrong bolt........try a different one........no wrong bolt again........ ah finally found it. Unscrewed it and the oil pours out with some pressure all over the floor missing the oil pan (cut out milk carton) and all over the floor Shocked

Scramble to get the oil in to the milk carton and finally start wiping the floor as it drains.

I wiggle the bike and get it all out. Put the bolt back in and fill it up again but this time just to the top of the proper mark!!

Woohoo my first oil change Thumbs Up

It's all part of the learning experience, and we all do stupid things. Only the brave admit to them.

I've ridden off with the steering lock still on, on 2 separate occasions. Cue embarrassing low speed crash(es).

Not on a bike, but I remember filling my wife's car with oil without the sump plug refitted. It's the kind of mistake you only make once.

I love that last one. One question - when did you realise? In other words, how much oil had you put in?

A few miles with overfilled oil won't do any harm.

Yes you should be OK if it was only a few miles of normal riding. Just keep an eye out for any oil leaks and any oil burning.

I had problems with the acceleration, would the drain and proper refill revert it back to normal?

Just be aware that what usually happens if an engine has been overfilled is it starts to shove the excess oil out of the crankcase breather (assuming it didn't fluid-lock, which it hasn't because it's still running).

The crankcase breather is usually routed into the airbox.

SO

You might have an airbox and air filter contaminated with engine oil. If the filter is choked with oil, your bike will not be able to suck in enough air, will run rich and be very down on power. The happily simple solution is to wipe it all out with a clean rag then clean or replace the filter as appropriate.

TL;DR It might have fired some oil into the airbox. If it's running rough, have a look in there.

Air filter...whats that?

lol just kidding Shocked

Thanks for the explanation. I will run it tomorrow and if its still playing up, i'll take out the filter and give it a wipe over.

Thanks again.

Oil changes are often the first maintenance job a noob ever does... that's why so many oil changes go wrong. I can already see from this thread that I'm not the only one to have poured (expensive Sad) oil into a car engine, with the sump plug still out... all over the drive... Embarassed

Biggest oil related disaster I had was just after an oil change on the car, lying underneath checking for leaks around the sump plug I notice a rusty patch just above my face has an oil drip building.

I started picking at the rust until a big chunk falls off, followed by the contents of the sump puring out onto my face, neck and driveway.

Will not be doing that again.

I once left the old o-ring of my oil filter stuck to the engine and screwed the new filter on top of it (in my defence, it's almost impossable to see without removing the fairing, I was working by touch).

Fired the engine up, no problem and left it ticking over. First time I blipped the throttle it spewed ALL the oil out past the o-ring and into the belly pan at high pressure in five seconds flat.
