So today we set out to get the rear wheel off.

Wasn't as easy as I thought.

The Spindle will NOT come out.
used a load of WD40 on it, tried using wrenches, sockets... all sorts.

But it just won't budge.

The wheel will spin round without it moving, and the wheel can move back and forward with the adjusters.... so i don't know why it won't come out.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why it won't move?

Thumbs Up

Or failing that a proper hammer and a bit of wood against the spindle.

Hit it you girl.

You can't "unscrew" it since it isn't threaded inside the wheel. A rubber mallet's always done the job for me.

Helps if you lift the weight of the wheel with one arm as you whack to take some weight off the spindle and it'll slide out more easily.

When other end is proud by a few inches (depending on the strength of your whack and how stiff it is) just pull it out with your hands (may need a jiggle at this stage).

Don't forget to grease it when you put it back in. Thumbs Up

Hi

The spindle has probably seized to the inside of the bearings or to the bearing spacer.

Belting it might help but it will be quite easy to trash the thread on the spindle (you can try putting the nut on but not all the way down, so you land up smacking the nut).

All the best

Keith

Will i need to replace the bearings then?

On a tight budget and timescale, so would rather order them now than wait a while for delivery...

Cheers

Hi

Probably a good idea as you will put a load of side loading on them when taking the spindle out (if you can get it out, not unknown to have to cut the spindle).

All the best

I've had this before.

There will be a (surprisingly small) amount of corrosion on the spindle and a correspondingly small amount of corrosion on the inside of the alloy calliper hanger. This'll be where it's hanging up.

I'd apply some penetrating oil to this bit and try to tap the spindle or the hanger back and forth a bit.

Applying some heat directly to that casting would probably help matters a lot but be aware too much heat could damage the bearing seals. Freeze and release spray might help too.

I do recall I landed up clouting it out with a big hammer by putting the nut back on the spindle, resting a block of hardwood against it and giving it a few big hits with a lumphammer. Just be careful you don't damage the threads.

I wouldn't trust a bearing that has been held on one race and smacked into position / out of position on the other race.

All the best

Wotcha.

This happened to the front wheel spindle on my trike last September. Despite using a gas torch, a six foot bar, a 28lb sledge hammer and some four foot Stilsons, the bugger would not shift. Plan "B" involved an hydraulic press - even this did not move it. In the end, I had to drop the fork links out, cut through the spindle, then machine it out, where it had siezed in one wheel bearing, and one spacer. The other three bearings were free, and the brake calliper was free.
Bottom line . . . . off the road for a month, and a bill for £140 to have a spindle made ( could have made it myself, but this injury means I can't stand and operate the lathe ).

Week 1
Week 2
Week 3
Week 4
Week 5

Let's hope penetrating oil and a big hammer do the trick Thumbs Up

Ended up duct taping a bit of wood round the swingarm so it was up against the spindle and absolutely smacking it with a sledgehammer Thumbs Up

Got it out eventually Laughing

No damage to the spindle, no damage to the (surprisingly good condition) bearings. it was seized to the spacers, managed to free it off with the hammer and turning it on the other side.

polished it up, and going to give it a decent coating of grease when it goes back in.

Wheel's away just now getting the tyre changed so that should be that Thumbs Up

Got another problem now though, the sprocket carrier.

The bolts have been pressed down so they cover the bolts, can't get them off. is there a reason for this?

Cheers

Difficult to explain.

It's like... the thread the bolts go on to for holding the sprocket on, they've been pressed down, so they're rounded...

i'll try get a picture next time i'm up at the bike.

they LOOK like that, but i'm not sure if they're supposed to be like that.

Never taken a sprocket off a bigger bike, and on the CG it was simple... just wondering if it's supposed to be like that and there's another way of getting the sprocket off.

Cheers

I dont think that they should be like that , someone prob bashed them over as there are no locking tabs & will , i think have to come off & be replaced with new nuts & bolts , unless anyone knows different ? Neutral

Is it fitted with tab washers? TTBOMK they should be nuts not bolts.
