Triumph triples
Ducati 1198 (probably as much due to the clutch rattle as the exhaust)
Reckon I'd probably recognise an RS125 too

I can recognise bikes belonging to people I know, but they all have aftermarket cans etc so I'm not really recognising the model.

This is going to sound really silly, but do ducati's run dry clutch or something? cause they sound all scrapy

Yes they do. They sound fine once the clutch isn't slipping, but the plates rattle when disengaged.

I can tell how many cylinders a bike has and make a rough guess at capacity from how loud it is, how deep it is and how high it's revving. So harleys are easy to spot, ducatis, supermoto's, 125's etc. The honda gear driven cam whistle is also pretty distinctive.

I can usually tell if the bike is a Ducati, but not the model, apart from a Monster, those I can tell a mile off.

Could probably recognise the sound of a gixer coming towards me from the airbox howl, particularly on the 600/750 when they're really screaming, but other than that maybe a Harley but that'd be about it.

Recognise the sound of most of my mates' bikes, but like above, they've all got aftermarket cans so not really the bike I'm hearing there.

Ah but could you tell the difference between a CBR400 and my CB-1? Smile

I reckon I could identify a VFR400/RVF400 but not much else...

CBX 1000. You can tell those bad boys a mile off!

Also Harleys. If you can't tell if it's a real one by the front indicators you can usually tell by the exhaust note.

Agree with a few bikes so far' Harley, Ducati's, V4 Honda's etc.

I'd definately know a VTR1000 from the sound. I reckon id also be able to tell:
1, Kawasaki KMX 125/200.
2, ZX6R J especially on tickover.
3, CB500
4, DT/TY175
5, RG500 gamma
6, RD500LC
7, FS1E

There are probably a few other's that i can't think of, and a few bikes that you would know what type of bike they are from the sound, if not the model. Examples are:
2stroke trials machines, and 500cc MX'ers etc.

VFR750F/R
VTR1000 SP1/2
Easily on tickover, but both are very distinctive at a distance too.

Any Aprilia 1l 65degree V-twin.

GSX-R750 (SRAD and before)

Any air cooled Harley is obviously a Harley (unless it's a Buell). brbrbrbbrrbbbrbbr

CBR400 and CB-1 are difficult to tell the difference. I had forgotten CB-1 had cam gear too.

If I saw one, you would quickly recognise the sound of gunshots to the owner's head.

I can always tell the type of engine, single, twin, triple, 4 etc. I can tell whether it is 2t or 4t. I can usually tell the rough capacity.

Certain bikes I can tell like the big bang R1's, Harleys, the 955 Triumphs. SV650's, Ducatis, I reckon I could tell a TDM/TRX with open pipes.
