Depends on the battery, depends on the charger.
A low amp 'trickle' charger will be putting something like 1/4 Amp into the battery.
If you have a 16Ahr battery, that means it will deliver 16 Amps for one hour, and what comes out, has to have gone in, so to get 16Ah's worth of electric in it at 1/4a you would have to charge it for about three days... and as batteries 'loose' charge with time, maybe even longer.
Charge it with a 2A motorcycle battery charger, 16Ah battery, from flat would take about 8 hours.
With a 4A car battery charger, about four hours.
With a 16A 'boost' charger, about an hour....
16Ah is very big for a bike battery, sort of thing you'd get on a big capacity tourer. 12 or 14Ah would be more normal, and charge times would reduce accordingly.
On a lightweight, may only have a 6 or 8 Ah battery, and charging one of those up on even a regular charger could be like slapping a big bike battery on a boost charge.
Over-charging a battery can boil the acid out of them, or if they get too hot too fast distort the plates, so YES it is adviseable to use the lowest charge rate possible, AND to avoid over-charging by leaving them for prolonged periods on charge, but how much and how long is all dependent on the ratings of battery and charger.
Optimate chargers and battery conditioners are another matter, they (should) measure the voltage accross terminals and only deliver charge when the battery is low, and switch off when its fully charged, though many simply deliver a very small constant trickel current. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
