PostPosted: 21:53 - 16 Mar 2011    Post subject: Theory Test Info Reply with quote

My birthday is on December 3rd and my insurance runs out ~13th December. The ideal plan is to take my theory on my birthday, have a few tests during the week, then take my test!

Problem is though, I am guessing you have to get your theory before you take your big test. So, can you take your theory test at 16? As I presume there is a 2 week or so waiting list to take your test and ideally I want to renew my insurance on a bigger bike...

Can anyone confirm?

Thumbs Up

Yes you can, I am sure some one older and wiser will come along with a link to prove it but I am too lazy to look, as are you Wink

I was under the impression that with a car you could take your theory test up to 3 months before your 17th birthday. Probably the same with a bike.

Chinese whispers though, I don't know any of that for a fact.

You can take your theory test once your provisional licence becomes valid.
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday. You can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday however, you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.

Can't find anything on motorbikes on the direct gov website though. Thinking

Yeah. And our licence becomes valid at 16 so surely?
I think a phone call might be in order.

Aye but the motorcycle entitlement isn't valid until 17 so you don't want to be doing a moped theory or anything. Neutral

i did my theory about 2 weeks ago and im 16, 17 in may. just make sure you select entitlement A for motorcycles. i didnt realise i could do it until i read this paragraph right at the bottom of a page on the dvla website, which said any person currently holding a provisional license can do their theory test but they must be 16. hope this answers your question Smile

There is a moped test right? For when you want to ride a 50 without Ls? Which you can take at 16? And involves a theory test? Then I would, indeed, expect you to be able to take a theory test at 16.
