Hi all,

I've just joined the forum as I can't seem to get any advice by googling or searching. As I'm not a 100% sure what I should be looking for so sorry if this has been resolved elsewhere.

I have a Kymco Stryker, 125, 2003. The other week I left it for two days and then it wouldn't start. Checked a lot of things and replaced the plug and coil which is now sparking nicely.

The battery is drained and can't afford another atm, however it should still kickstart. After the new coil and plug it started and ticked over in neutral for half an hour or so. I turned it off and upon kick starting again the lever forced back under foot and there was a terrible grinding noise.

I put it in gear and ensured it rolls with the clutch in which it does, I checked the spark which is consistently sparking bright when the kick lever is fully down. There seems to be good compression aswell.

What could the problem be since it did start and ticked over about half an hour before this issue.

cheers

Craig

if you leave the kick start down it will grind make sure the kick start returns to upright and it wont grind,

if it wont spring back up some of the kickstart internals might have gone, you need to then get inside the clutch cover to remove the broken parts

You left your bike idling for half an hour?

That is likely to cause more issues than you are solving, if you need to charge battery, go for a ride somewhere. Idling can ruin a new plug and over heat an air cooled engine (not sure if yours is).

Kick starts will make a horrible noise if held down whilst the engine is turning over/running.

Thanks for the replies. The kick lever is springing back up.

I also had the air filter removed so could see in the back of the carb'.

When I kick the lever it returns to its upright position the bike chugs, with a puff of blue smoke out the back end of the carb' and the grinding noise. Sometimes whilst trying to kick it the lever forcefully pushes back against my foot.

Another new plug for you. And don't leave it idling for 30 mins at a time Smile

hey,
Yeah, air cooled 4 stroke, leaving it sitting for long periods of time could cause overheating...

You say there is a grinding noise,
is this whenever its idling?
It sounds like some of the kick start internals have gone (first suggestion if it grinds after starting with the kick start up).
Blue smoke could be worrying as it could suggest burning oil but you say its coming out the carb?!

This would suggest a backfire and or maybe even timing problems (exhaust gases coming out the inlet port when the port should be closed).

I am getting my odl stryker back on the road at the moment co-incidentaly, i know its a bugger to get the top off without dropping the engine (possible atall?) but it might be worth getting the top off the head and the plug off the alternator side and checking the timing (the flywheel has "t" stamped for TDC and a few other markings i think are the inlet/exhaust port timings).

How is the bike running noises asside?

Best regards

-Jvr

Thanks for the replies so far,

Oddly enough when I try to start the bike after it being left for several hours it will start within the first 10 kicks or so. Once it stops though there's no chance of it starting again.

On the occasions it has started there's been no grinding noise whilst it is running. Though the grinding noise is heard whilst trying to kick it and for a short time when it starts running.

I had it started earlier on, and have just spent half an hour to get it started again but nothing happening. Though I suspect if I leave it and go back in a few hours it will start as has been the same on the few days I have tried it. I drained the carb to make sure it was not flooded etc.

I just don't understand why it will start after being left for a long period then after it started nothing.

I have put yet another new plug in.

Thanks for the help

Craig

Maybe fuel starvation ? when you start after it being left float bowl full , so starting & after its run for a bit its emptying ,not filling up fast enough so not starting .
I'd check the flow from fuel tap & if not that the float hight Neutral

valve clearances can point to trouble starting when hot or cold. I dont know how its gapped and dont care enough to find out.

Just get a battery, or try kicking it with all lights off
