My bike had a service today at Thunderroad in Bridgend. As I was heading home seen an old guy in full bike gear and his bike parked up down the road. Stopped, asked him if he was ok he said no bike is bollocked (battery dead).
Took him back to his bike and phoned the AA. I had to hide my bike before the AA came. The AA got the bike started, I had to jump in the AA van and we headed off to JTS bikes (2 miles away) following the old guy. He was supposed to be part exchanging this bike hehe. AA guy pissed off but I had to get back to my bike. A kind fellow looking at the bikes in JTS gave me a lift back.
This old guy had a Sachs 125, never seen one before. Anyway, the moral of the story get breakdown cover. |

Good for you OP. I wish there were more like you. Not so long ago, just about any biker would stop if he saw another in trouble. Sadly, that's not the case anymore. I ran out of fuel on my Guzzi a couple of years ago and, while pushing it the 3 or 4 miles up the A14 to the nearest garage, about 20 bikes must have passed me without stopping. I suspect this would especialy be the case if the broken down bike was, say a CB125, and the bike passing was a gleaming new GSXR with some posing twat with colour co-ordinated leathers on.

It's a Guzzi, they probably just thought you were taking it our for its weekly push.

From one anecdote, yes. When I broke down(*) on my CM125 clone I watched the world and its dog ride by as I dug around in the carb.
I've stopped at a couple of abandoned bikes to see if I could find the owner and help out, but I've still to get my angel wings.

I always Offer to help bikers.
Apart from once when I was in Brighton and just done fishing.
My cousin was a driver and we were putting our rods away and I saw a guy push his bike. I asked if he was OK and he said yeah, just no petrol.
So I instinctively left him, but all the way back to London I was thinking damn I feel bad.
Since that day, I will always stop for a biker. I recall 3 or 4 mile push of my tiny RS125 in bike gear and a helmet.
It's good to help each other, and as long as we do it, then it will help keep that tradition of bilers helping bikers.
Once upon a time, if you found out someone else was a biker, it would be pretty cool, but these days, anyone seems to pass! ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

Not sure if this is true, but if you leave your helmet next to a wheel, is that a 'I am broken down' signal? ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

I'd not heard that one. Are you sure you're not thinking of a tie on the doornob? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I thought I had heard of it, so I take it no one actually does it then?
It would be cool if CBT's taught it. ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

It's worth doing just incase somebody does know about it. But regardless of wether or not they have their helmet next to their wheel or not I still tend to stop anyway.
Good idea about teaching it on the CBT though. ____________________ Current: Honda Nsr 125

Actualy, it was very reliable - apart from one thing - the starter motor! It was a 500 Monza and in the couple of years I had it, it only let me down once,(apart from the starter), with an electrical problem - hardly surprising considering the electrics were on a PCB board right behind the front wheel and looked like something Marconi had put together. After fixing the starter motor a couple of times, I gave up and just bumped started it all the time but, with the right amount of choke and throttle, it would fire up first push most times.
The kindest samaritans I met while on a bike was when I was 16, my parents were away camping and I had a phone call to say my grandad was seriously ill. I set off on a 250 Kawasaki that I was in thr process of fixing up to find my folks all the way from Birmingham to N Wales. In some of the heaviest rain I've ever known, I stopped at a house to ask directions and the elderly woman invited me in, sat me by the roaring coal fire, gave me some soup and dried out my clothes before I set off again. I never did find the camp site, but the police had anyway and my folks got the message. |
