Just watch "sum of all fears" and the bomb just went off and now it's rescue time, why are they such winds after a nuclear bomb

I might download that my self.

It's the movement of air.

The high temperatures and radiation cause gas to move outward radially in a thin, dense shell called "the hydrodynamic front." The front acts like a piston that pushes against and compresses the surrounding medium to make a spherically expanding shock wave.
The blast wind may exceed one thousand km/h

Two distinct, simultaneous phenomena are associated with the blast wave in air:

* Static overpressure, i.e., the sharp increase in pressure exerted by the shock wave. The overpressure at any given point is directly proportional to the density of the air in the wave.
* Dynamic pressures, i.e., drag exerted by the blast winds required to form the blast wave. These winds push, tumble and tear objects.

If you can, look for a 1984 docu-drama called "Threads".

Nothing fancy and Hollywood about it, but it still scares the hell out of me!

an explosion is a rapid expansion of volume due to the rapid increase of temperature. for the volume to expand it must displace something else. i.e the air. hence massive wind

I believe theres an initial outward blast, but the hot fireball causes air to rise quickly drawing massive winds inwards towards the blast area.

these show stuff going one way then the other.

Probably a repost but the raptronic photos of nuclear blasts look weird

Is this the one where they lose contact with bombers? All done in black and white?

If its is then yes scary.

I think that was Dr Strangelove. With Peter Sellers. Also a good film.

i understood that as the bomb exploded the air would be pushed out and then sucked back into the vacuum left, however the finds shown in the film seem to continue sometime after the explosion.

is this hollywood or fact?

Air is pushed out by the force the explosion but you also get cold air being sucked in and pushed up which creates the mushroom cloud.

depends on the size of the bomb, the super heated air rises and swirls causing its own weather system, this is often storm like.
If my memory of history serves me the french experiments in the french ploysimmin islands use to cause there own weather systems, heavy rain, tropical storms etc.

Think of cadles on a birthday cake, then you blow them out you force the smoke to move, once you have stopped blowing the smoke doesnt stabalise, it rolls back on it self and keeps blowing around.

So a nuke going off will cause a massive low pressure causing air to be sucked into the blast zone as said above, this will continue to swirl for some time after the blast untill the air sorts itself out.
