I came upon a revelation in my own mind about why I dislike peds so much. It was half past six in the evening and I had just come back from a 12 hour shift - I had got up at 4am. This is why its probably a bit silly.

Here it is. I like bikes and dislike peds because...

a bike is an engine with a seat, and a ped is a seat with an engine.

Simple innit? Smile

I'd rather have a huge engine which was uncomfy rather than an armchair with a chainsaw motor.

Just thought that I might share that with you all. Smile

Not many people like peds, but it's cheap and cheerful transport for 16 year olds.
It's a bit like when your 17 and able to drive a car sort of thing but not. Confused

When people turn 16 they think, "I can get a 50cc now" and automatically think, moped. Annoying they might be but as I said they are cheap and easy to use/run.

Buying brand new peds on the other hand is some what stupid in my eyes as you'll only have it for a year and will only lose money on it.

Back to the annoyance part again, yes they're annoying, yes they're comfy with a huge seat. No they're not high performance sports bikes, no they're not got huge engines.
Oh well I think it's everyones passion to hate them, and for others not.
I used to ride the next best thing to a ped, an Aprilia RS50 as some of you know and I knew it wasn't as good as a large engined sports bike but I found it more comfortable than a ped and sort of felt like i was riding a large bike but with the lack of a large engine.

Peds will never be as good as a proper bike but it's just a form of transport for a 16 year old and in some ways an experience to learn the road for upcoming years of riding something bigger.

Sorry for the lecture. LOL

TBH mate what else can you really ride at 16, not as if you can get a Daytona at that age Wink . I understand you're argument if you are having a go at the people who deliberately go and buy peds when they could have a bigger bike.

As far as I understand it Marjay isn't having 'a go' at anyone, he is simply stating that he hates peds and has suddenly found a reason for doing so.

Personally I don't mind people who ride peds and fully understand why at 16 years old you would ride one (I had a RD50 myself). The only thing I find annoying is the ped boys who brag to their mates that they can go 60 mph on a SR50 (I doubt the speedos even read that high anyway). Laughing

No you don't understand though. An aprilia RS 50 is still an engine with a seat added as a sort of afterthought. A 'ped is a chair with an engine added as an afterthought. As 50cc's go I like the RS50. You misunderstand me sir! Very Happy

Thats exactly my point... exactly! Why ride a 400cc scooter? Why ride a 650cc scooter? Why ride a 250cc scooter?

Why not buy a DT50 or AR 50 when your 16?I know cost maybe, but scoots arent cheap you know!

That reinforces my point. Scooters are chairs with an engine bunged on and bikes are engines with a bit of foam plonked on the top!! Very Happy
Maybe I was wrong to use the word 'ped. I really mean scooters. I have no particular dislike for 50cc geared bikes. Smile

I quite like that! Sir! Hehe. Very Happy But I get your point totally about the ped being an arm chair with a little engine strapped on it.
And as for the RS50 being an engine with a seat strapped to it, I sort of agree with you there but it looks like a big bike, feels like a big bike and handles like a big bike but with the lack of a large engine.

As for that, I had an AR50 as my first road bike. Wasn't a bad little thing.

At the end of the day it's upto you wether you like peds or not and I know a lot of you don't.

I was wrong to say "Ped" I really mean scooter. Smile

I don't *Hate* them per se, I was very careful not to use the word hate, that is why I used the word "dislike". But now I'm getting really pedantic. Maybe I'm a bit too unconfrontational with my careful use of language. Laughing

I just wanted to share the fact that I suddenly realised why scooters are so disagreeable. I think that gets to the crux of the matter.

TBH I'd like to have a go on an AR50 or something just to see what its like - I'm always up for riding different bikes.

As for the use of the word Sir, maybe I have been reading too much Conan-Doyle again!

A random bit of Conan-Doyle wrote:

"My dear sir," cried Holmes, "there cannot be the least doubt in the world that it has been written by two persons doing alternate words. When I draw your attention to the strong t's of 'at' and 'to', and ask you to compare them with the weak ones of 'quarter' and 'twelve', you will instantly recognise the fact."

Very Happy

Bah, I want an armchair with a chainsaw motor. Sounds like fun. Razz

You better watch what your saying Mark, I'll be buying a c90 soon, that's pretty close to being a scooter. Confused

A C90 has gears, and it doesn't look like an armchair. Plus the engine isn't mounted on the swingarm. That makes it a bike in my book.

Can I have a go when you get it?? Smile

Have a look at this then. Not an arm chair, or a chainsaw engine, but it's close enough Smile

My brother had an AR50 when he was 16 and my mum thought they were good as he had no problems with his.
We both got one bought as a birthday present.
I had no problems with it, it did an indicated 45mph at standard spec AFAIK (I didn't know If it was derestricted or not) and it was quite a comfy thing to ride.
I wouldn't mind having a little go on the AR125 TBH.
I quite like the bikes. Smile
I also heard, not quite sure If it's true, but they can reach speeds upto about an indicated 70mph? The lack of aerodynamics I think would stop it from doing them speeds.
To do that and I know people have done it, is to get an AR80 engine and put in the AR50 frame, get the fairing and maybe you'll hit it.
Unfortunately I wrote the AR50 off. Pulled out of a blind junction, couldn't see anything coming and BANG.

Please, somebody buy that man a drink.

I think all this hatred for peds is a bit stupid and saying that people shouldn't buy new ones is a bit stupid as well. Why shouldn't people buy something brand new if 'they' want to? Should we all buy second hand tv's because brand new ones are going to cost less next year or maybe we could try buying second hand trainers, wouldn't want to pay over the odds for something that you're going to have to replace anyway. Laughing

If these 16 year olds want to go out and buy a ped then let them. If i had the money when i was 16 i would have got one (/ me waits for mocking to start). In the grand scheme of things they're not doing you any harm.

I have no hatred for ped riders except for the exceptions of the stupid ones who ride round with no lids on and carry passengers on the back with no helmet except a hood for a disguise.
If a ped rider acknowledges me then I acknowlege them back (unless I'm tired) and even pull a wheelie for them from time to time.

Thats a bit of a strange comparison, the main reason I would buy a second hand bike is that I'd be worried about crashing a new one. But to this day <touch wood> I've never crashed a TV or my trainers. Razz

To be honest if I could get a good deal on a second hand TV I'd buy one instead of paying extra to get it new.

I've bought new bikes for the last 6 or so years, I could afford it and I knew that if anything had been done to it was down to me. The only reason the bike I've got now is second hand, was down to spending lots of money on a new bike with a sprog on the way and getting it past the wife!

If you've got the cash why not, someone's got to buy them otherwise the second hand market and the industry would grind to a halt.

Well not really, anything you buy is going to get ruined eventually and will no doubt drop in value. It's the same with bikes, trainers, electronics, it's pretty much the same with anything. I just don't get why everyone is always so against someone buying a brand new bike, if someone wants to, let them, that's all im trying to say.

As for people on scooters, i bet quite a few of people on big bikes have a thing or two to say about people who ride 125's. Most of us started out on them but don't talk about not liking 125's.

I've never had problems with Ped riders myself, I give em a nod if I'm in the mood. Think any encouragement we can give helps inspire them to get a bigger bike and stick with it. I'm not saying that I've not been pissed off by someone on one either but no more than any thing else really. Been annoyed by lots of different things on the roads, some larger capacity bikes too.

Exactly, i'd also like to mention that couriers are a lot worse than moped riders in my experience and nobody else ever finds the need to mention how bad/dangerous they are.
