If it's been running on just water for a while then it could be worth doing a flush using a rad flushing liquid first. Coolant contains corrosion inhibitors, water does not. Corrosion means that very small bits of shit will build up in small passages and restrict the colling efficiency, which is bad.
Personally I would drain it (following the manual, could be multiple drain points), flush the engine and the rad with a hosepipe, then fill with normal tap water and flushing chemical to flush it by the instructions on the bottle. If it says 15 mins on tickover, then do that, not 3 days on the redline. Drain and flush with a hose a couple more times, then refill with coolant by the instructions in the manual. If may advise you to run it up to temperature with the expansion cap removed first.
I never use distilled water, I change coolant yearly and it has corrosion inhibititors so tap water isn't going to kill it. If you're planning on going down that route, you may as well just get ready mixed coolant, only tend to need a couple of litres for a bike.
A useful future tip - choose a type of coolant and stick to it. It's difficult to completely remove all of the old coolant, so changing to a different colour can make it look dirty. I found this on my car, which had very old green stuff in when I got it and I changed to blue. 2 changes later and there's still a slight green tinge in it. |
