Which and for why. Personally I'm leaning towards the MR2.

Better looks, and more powah, but the MX5 can't have such a cult following for no reason.

Depends if you're a devilishly stylish chap such as myself.

I won't be seen out without my Prada handbag and GHD's.

May clash slightly with my Louis Vuitton Man bag, but I think we can make it work. PM me so we can co-ordinate our outfits prior to each drive.

MX5 is a far better drive in my opinion. They are slow but NA MR2s don't feel fast either.

Try to get a shot in both, I suspect you will find the MX5 instantly entertaining especially if you drive it in the wet. They're brilliant as long as you don't care about power.

If all you care about is the driving experience get the MX5. If looks and image are more important get the MR2...

Now isn't that ironic?

it depends on which model mr2, turbo, or just injected

if non turbo, then i would go for the mx5 1800 with the 6 speed,
the mrs has the 1600, and while it handles as good as ive ever experienced in a car,
the lack horseys let it down a bit, the extra 200cc makes all the difference, pretty cheap to run as well,
the only down side is the lack of space

Woah there son, I don't drive an MX5 I just bang on about them constantly as I think they're brilliant.

I drive a rolling slab of chavvy testosterone that only men would ever like although I'm planning on getting an MX5 for the missus shortly.

Well, I say it's for the missus....really it's for me to do trackdays in but that's not what I'm telling her.

it's the 2000-2006 model I'm looking at, rather than the wedgey version. (So I guess that's technically speaking the Mk 3 MR2. Thinking

1.8. VVT is your lot.

I think the chaps at the salon call that one the mk 2.5.

EDIT: Misread that...you're talking MR2s aren't you (the mk 2.5 MX5 also had vvt or something similar).

In fact I thought you were talking about mk2 MR2s for the whole thread...scratch my advice then, I've never driven a MK3 MR2 so have no idea how they compare to MX5s Embarassed

if thats the case, then mx5,
if i was just a wee bit shorter, i'd have one in a heart beat,
they are so easy to work on as the car was initally designed to fit a v8
so the il4 just floats about in there,

there are loads of upgrades to both the engine and handling
if you can, try and get a hard top (it just goes over the soft top)
but it makes a big difference in winter

people who call them hairdressers cars are just trying to cover up the fact that they want a thrash in it, and are homosexuals themselves Very Happy

having driven both mx5s and most variants of the mr2
in all but power and space the mx5 is the better car,

Maybe so, however I can't fit into an MX5, I'm about 2 inches too tall.

Had a sit in one and my head was in the soft top. I reckon with the roof down my line of sight would be right at the top of the wind screen. Crying or Very sad

Still, made the choice quite easy. I fit in an MR2, so I'm picking it up on Saturday.

No co-ordinating of outfits I'm afraid Garth. Crying or Very sad

You've got no boot.

You have a bike for when you don't need a boot.

I do so have a boot. Two storage bins behind the seats, and a "frunk" for my Mars bars.

Mk2 MX5 boot's not massively bigger, just a different shape.

@ Garth I'm about 6ft, but my head was in the roof of the Mark II, had at least an inch of room in the MR2. It's witchcraft I tell thee. Apparently the seats in the Mk2 are mounted higher for some reason(after a quick google) so if you're 6ft or over, forget it.

Can't insure an S2k, however they are a possibility for the future. Insurance is steep because so many people get caught out by the knife edge handling of the early ones.

Also just found out that Toyota offer a turbo kit, or the motor from an Elise/Celica drops in giving you 190 bhp. Laughing

I reckon you want some linglongs on the back for tail out action.

Never quite worked out why they didn't offer that version of the engine in the first place. It was never well suited to the heavier cars they put it in (Celica and Corolla, both a lot slower than you would think) as it had bugger all torque at low revs but would be great in the sub-tonne MR2 (like I'm sure it is in the Elise).

Did you get a proper drive in the MX5 despite the height issues? I'm just curious how the MK3 MR2 compared to it handling wise as it appeals to me a lot more than the MK2. The only thing putting me off them is the mid engined layout scares the shit out of me in terms of trying to work on the engine.

MX5 without a doubt.
That said, the MR2 is a good little drive.

Dads fiancee is the editor of Hard Top Soft Top MX5 club mag, so i'll be biased, but they are really fantastic cars to drive as long as you haven't got over a 500m straight Laughing

I'd either have a very early one, or one of the latest ones. The ones in the middle we're all fatter and more powerful, but didn't have the directness of the early models (which is the appeal of the car in the first place). Mazda lost their way a little, but have regained it with the most recent version.

Dads financess got number 1 of 300 of a very special edition. Fully loaded, bose stereo, nappa leather all round, LSD, 170bhp 2.0 engine, roll bars, heated seats etc.. Basically every option available. I really want it for a work car Laughing

Can't say I did. Seemed a little pointless if I can't even fit into it.

Already looking at the prices of underbody braces. Laughing

I must stay calm!

Top secret do a 250bhp turbo kit for £3k. Laughing

You'd probably fit in the mk3 mx5 okay, it's a bit bigger. I mean, I can actually move my elbow without hitting the door right away. Smile

Well, I'm 6'4" (with a long back) and I used to fit my other half's Mk11 MX5 just fine..... the Mk3 MR2 had a bar holding the roof up exactly where my head needed to be.

So I'd have to say to OP - go try them both.

Just to add: MX5 is called a hairdresser's car by those who don't know how good they are (and, generally, who don't even like cars).

The Mk3 MR2, however, is not for hairdressers or gays. It's purely for girls. It just is.
