After a few recent conversations I've had with other bikers many say they never speed through country villages as this is dangerous, bad publicity for bikers and illegal. However is this really true, hence this poll - please feel free to vote annomously and please be honest.

Villages tend to be narrow, winding roads with tractors, schools etc..too much is going on, it's not worth chancing.

I generally give it ~10% beans over the limit in 20s and 30s, ~20% over in 40s and 50s and FUCK YEAH I'M THE KING BITCH at anything above that.

More hazards in a village, people reversing out driveways, delivery vans and just general dozy cunts.

Most villages I will slow down, but one I go through a bit often is just one road with a couple of side streets, all fairly wide and open. I often speed through there, but only at about 40 or less

Maybe it's early days but I thought that too, to quote posts I have read on another forum:

"I do know that in Sussex we are plagued with idiots on bikes who believe the road is a race track and that they can simply ignore speed limits and all the other rules of the road. They invariably have less real ability than they believe, judging by the number of accidents I attend as a paramedic where a single bike is involved. And before all you sensible bikers out there complain I'm not having a go at you, many bikers DO behave sensibly but the vast majority do not."

and

"Maybe a special breed of biker visits Sussex, especially on Bank Holidays, but I would whole-heartedly agree. Very few of them observe the 30mph speed limit through our village, with many of them doing 60 or more."

I really think the majority of bikers (well at least the ones I know) would not dream of doing 60mph in a 30mph in a village. I suspect it's noisy exausts which non bikers associate with speed as it may sound fast but really it's just ticking over (well the BMW1000 I had a go on at the weekend did). The first poster, quoted above, is a paramedic biker.

Going by the above posts, this poll reflects the minority.

Villages vary, some are like dormitories and are practically deserted, I might risk 50ish if I can see no hazards.

Speed limits are a dumb idea anyway since plenty of drivers will do their utmost to drive at the limit.
In a busy place with cars parked and shops etc, even 15mph might be fast enough.

You could make a case for doing away with all limits and the rule should be 'inappropriate speed' is not allowed.

This.

I pretty much don't look at speed limits, and just ride/drive to the conditions. If it means I end up doing 30 in a 30, then whoop de do, the guardians of the kittens can go back to their curtain twitching looking for paedophiles.

Villages....surely that's where anyone sensible would expect the boys in blue to hide behind a pillar box with a speed gun.

I mostly like to be the grey man... subtle when I'm likely to be noticed. Hence road legal exhaust, correct sized number plate... and sticking to the limit in 30s. Usually in 4th gear.

The "rules" from my old motorclub:
30 means 30
40 means 40
50 means 50 (pretty much, -ish)
NSL means No Sodding Limit Twisted Evil

Having said all that, the number of tailgaters I get when I travel at 30 exactly coupled with the extra vunerability I feel on the bike (in the car, I'll often just set the cruise and ignore them... on the bike I know if they do manage to touch my rear wheel, I'll be crashing) means I now often find myself doing 33/34 just to keep them a little bit happy Sad

Lets rephrase that...

The vast majority do behave sensibily, its the minority that do not....

Or that paramedic would be attending far more single bike accidents. Twisted Evil

Bikers are no diffrent to any other road users. there are good and bad.

You just have to remember that in your average village the dangers ramp up quite a lot and slowing down should be the norm anyway.

I hate people speeding through my village so I never speed through anyone else's.

If I wanted to speed through a village I would buy an Audi and chop my balls off.

+1 to yenpowell and defblade.

It annoys me when smallboys in their saxos with 6" tailpipes blast past my house at 45 rattling the windows (I live in a suburb, not a village, if that matters) so I tend to keep to (or below) the limit as appropriate.

But yes, villages are also a speedtrap magnet on nice days, so keeping it low keeps the residents happy and my license clean!

Making myself sound like an old git here, but there are some really nice villages on some of the routes I ride and I like to enjoy them. There is no point blasting through at a ridiculous speed, you miss all the charm.

I personally find it disrespectful to speed through villages so I don't do it.

As with others, I stick to posted speed limits (30/40/50) but in NSL I might press on a bit.

Always slow down.

There are PLENTY of miles to enjoy biking at the speed you want.
Or a racetrack if you want to be a nutter.

Speeding through villages is utterly lame, and selfish. No need for it at all. and if your in a town (unless commuting), you should jsut be embarrased your not riding on real roads and are in a town.

Get far more respect from the locals if your clearly making an effort to slow right down for villages...

We'll ignore the douch chasing me for doign 40mph in a 30mph though early in the morning. Just to try to have a go. Completley ignoring the fact he's had to do at least 50mph to catch me to tell me.. What a gonad. simply stopped in the middle of the road to tell him that too.

Hi

Can't say I always stick bang onto speed limits in villages and towns. However as in 30 limits I am quite often one of the slowest I am not sure that anything like as many of the general population who claim to keep to 30s actually do so.

All the best

Keith

Usually do a little over the limit through villages town ie. 35 in a 30, 45 in a 40 just to keep the arseholes behind happy as i hate having cagers inches from my rear wheel.

But riding slowly to piss off the cagers is part of the fun, when the NSL sign comes along I am on the distant horizon.

I try and stick to 30 limits, but sometimes they start the 30 zone 1/4 a mile before a village and 1/4 after you leave the village.

On Sunday coming back from Hartside to Hexham, there are a few villages like the above. Rolling Eyes

To be honest, it depends on the sort of riding I'm doing.

If I'm out on a big group hoon with the usual group then speeding through a 40 or less will result in a massive bollocking from the bloke who sort of runs the rides. There are several, good reasons for this, the first and most obvious being the kittens argument; the times of day we go out, usually summer evenings, there are bound to be kids around playing. Added to this, we tend to use similar routes, so becoming a frequent nuisance for busybodies is worth avoiding, and also there are usually at least a couple of bikes with cameras on board, and should plod want to view the footage, at least it'll show we've been sensible where it really matters I suppose. It's quite funny to be honest, adds a bit of excitement to the ride, as everyone plays by the same rules, it's a bit like the pit stops in F1, with everyone screaming to the line, then anchors on and pootling through at what feels like snail's pace! You can sometimes see a couple of bikes ahead of you, not that far, but in reality they're probably a couple of minutes ahead, and you get to watch them hit the national and scream off while you've still got half the village to get through!

Having said all of this, I'd be lying if I claimed I never speed through 30 limits, I live in the arse end of nowhere, where many of the little villages are literally a couple of houses defined by a slightly lower limit than the rest of the road, so although I would nearly always slow down and pay close attention, it's not always to the limit, but down to what I deem to be an appropriate speed for the conditions.

Similarly, a lot of the decent biking roads round here have a couple of nice corners in the villages that immediately precede them, lots of visibility, so I'll sometimes tip in and accelerate through a bit, provided visibility is good, to get a bit of heat into the sides of the tyres, then backing off and back to the limit as soon as it's upright again.

Also, when burbling through a village, as soon as I see the little white disc with a black line, I have a quick scan of what's between me and it, and if I'm happy with the situation, back to either second or first gear and pin it.

Basically, I have no personal rules about following limits, although if I'm with the group, I follow the agreed rules, when I'm on my own it's whatever feels appropriate, I've seen 3 figues in a 30 (probably speedo inaccuracy officer) but conversely I've held up other traffic by travelling at less than 30 when that felt more appropriate for the conditions.

30's are usually there for a good reason, but that doesn't mean they're not as open to interpretation as any other limit, just use your noggin.

Treat it like any other 30 road really, usually do 35 - 40 as my bike will not cruise in 4th at 30mph very smoothly and 3rd is a bit too revvy which probably wouldn't matter if I had the stock zaust on but I do not Very Happy

Strangely, whenever I travel through Sussex villages at 30mph I find the Range-Rover driving locals tend to get quite shirty at having being slowed from their usual 50mph...

So ignore the NIMBY fucktards would be my advice. Mr. Green
