I'm trying to wedge a Honda FMX650 lump into a RGV chassis and need all the room I can get.

Is this an exhaust gas recirculation system and will removing it cause me lots of problems later?

Anyone point me in the direction of some decent info on it all? There are so many tubes/pipes/parts/etc I'd love to do without.

Sometimes fitting an EGR needs more advanced ignition timings due to the slower burn rate. Removing it will put up emissions, reduce efficiency, might improve power or give timing issues when warm.

I'd get rid of it if i were you.

ive never had a car or bike that's ever kept its emission gear more than a few weeks before it was all ripped out an blanked off,
a new exhaust and some rejetting and it'll be a new bike

it'd be one of the first things id do to the bike

So its called secondary air injection, no wonder I couldn't find anything when searching.

Cheers chaps, very helpful Thumbs Up Karma

I work alot with deisel EGR but its all controlled via the ecu.
Thought that the FMX might have a mechanical system that might cause problems by just being blanked off.

I dont think that the ignition being advanced slightly will be a problem, the bike only runs 8.3:1 comp standard.

From looking around, the exhaust gas isnt recirculated like I thought, the SAI puts fresh air into the exhaust to lower the emissions. So the ignition should be affected at all.

Thought that this may have all been part of the SAI system too but its just a breather system for the crank cases. So that can all be sacked off too. Brilliant!

its a lot of shit they stick on to essentially falsify emission results Very Happy
hehe,
on that forum i linked to, it had a good write up on un-corking the stock exhausts,

anyway i digress, if its anything like the xr650l which i believe they are almost the exact same engine setup,
they run really lean out of the box, so when you do, do the emission removal, make sure you do a re-jet as well
may be about a Pilot Jet: 55 and Main Jet: 158-160 you may need to play with the needle clip position as well,
actuall scrap that, the xr650l uses a bigger carb so all those jet setting will be out,

arh well still worth a play, find out what jets you have in the fmx and get a few sizes either side of stock from wemoto, and see how she goes
