A pair of non-paralell rainbows.

Not all that clear on the picture, it was WAY more intense than this but I had to find somewhere safe to stop and take a picture.

You can see the primary one and you can see a fainter secondary, inverted one outside it. But there's another rainbow, coming off the base of the primary one at a tangent. and heading up towards the apex of the secondary one. It's also a primary rainbow with red on the outside.

Now as far as I know, this defies the laws of physics. Rainbows are paralell and appear as concentric rings on account of the sun being in one place at a time.

You can see it more clearly if I mess about with the colour levels on the picture.

There is always a second rainbow whether you can see it or not.

The colours are always inverted.

EDIT

Walter Lewin explains in this lecture

EDIT

A 3rd rainbow? I don't see it.

EDIT

I see.

It's magic. Whistle

As I say. Faint in the picture but it was as intense as the main one initially. If you right click and view image, you'll get it bigger.

I labelled them, curves follow the red arc.

Pretty weird and interesting!

I've actually seen two fully formed rainbows side-by-side! I can't find an image in google of such a thing, just the usual "double" rainbows.

Maybe there's a patch in of air without rain, that would normally block your view, that has revealed a transition between the primary and secondary bows where you can only see red light.

Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

I swear I used to know this stuff. Now I just say "A wizard did it." Or if really pressed, shout "frustum!" and then leg it.

They are parallell (or actually concentric) you are seeing some parallax because of the angle of the photo and because the second one is a larger hemisphere sitting outside of the inner one. They only look parallel when viewed from a distance, when you are as close as it looks like you were, you are actually inside the circumference of them.

Very Happy Very Happy

I already said that a wizard did it.

This picture is very similar and the proposed cause is a reflective body of water as someone said above.
