my head gasket is leaking oil on my XR, How hard is it to remove the head of the engine to replace the leaking gasket? Anyone done this on a CG or XR before?

Got the replacement gasket, just need to know how to take the head off as I'v never done this before.

Thanks for any help guys!

It's all just undoing bolts which is really easy, except for the cam chain assuming it has one, which it may or may not depending on the year of the bike. You might need a chain riveter to split the chain. Putting it all back together is just the reverse, but you must tighten the bolts on the head in a cross pattern to squash it down evenly

its a push rod engine so it should be a VERY simple job..... I hope! I will add lots of before and after photos for sure! I just need to know how to take the head off! there seems to only have on bolt holding the top part of the engine on, on the right hand side!

Right I did it and it went really well! Push rod engines are so bloody simple to work on. I ended up having to take the complete head off because on of the push rods slipped off its bottom holder when I was putting it back together.

took me about 3 hours all in all because you have to strip everything off on a XR.

Put it all together, went for a 20mile run and yay no leaks and the engine sounds sweet as ever!

I will upload the photos i took later, thanks for your help rob!

Here are the photos I took!

The leak

Stripping down the bike

Strip EVERYTHING off from around the engine

Strip off the top of the head and the rocker unit thing

The bits look like this

Remove the carb and then remove the head

Remove the old gasket and clean up both the upper and lower head with a old rag or something to remove all the oil and crap.
https://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/225406_10150186495553622_500588621_6904352_7576366_n.jpg

Put it all back together with the new gasket and go for a nice long run!
https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/227416_10150186494848622_500588621_6904335_102629_n.jpg

Cool

Simple guide:

Strip down bike including the top engine mount which is bolted to the frame by to bolts which are covered by 2 rubber protectors

undo 3 bolts to remove the top cover

undo 3 more bolts which keep the rocker thing in place. Remember to hold onto the 2 push rods as you remove the rocker.

undo 4 more main bolts which are under the rocker unit

Slide the head up off holders

Clean both parts of the heads

replace gasket

put the bitch back together, just remember when putting the rods back in that the rods go into the bottom part of the engine at an angle!

Simples!

Just remember I'v never done any form of engine work like this before now and I found it pretty simple. It is ALMOST as simple as a 2 stroke engine as you cannot mess the timing up.

Any questions I will do my best to answer them! Hope this helps anyone else who done needs this done.

I was quoted £120+ vat for a shop to do this job AND i would of been without the bike for 3 weeks!

Cost me.... £10 for the gasket and 3 hours of my time!

50miles since i done the job and its not leaked at all Very Happy

Rob, what are the cables leading the the carb? I broke off one of the connectors leading to the carb. The bike still runs like it did before so it cant be too important can it?
