Help! Fitting new chain

Must be something I'm doing wrong.

New sprockets on, front and rear. Both the same size as the originals.

Rear wheel right forward as far as the axle will go in the slots.

New chain is 112 links... I've counted the new one, counted the old one, both the same, and checked on 'tinternet that 112 link is right.

So why is there a 3 link gap when the ends should be next to each other for fitting the master link????!!!!!

Here's a picture of the back end, and one of the front (not that I think there's much could have gone wrong there, at least). Yes, my bike is dirty.

Only thing I can think to do is take the axle out and move the wheel forward and hope there's enough stretch afterwards to get the axle back through....

I have a feeling you have miscounted the links in the chain.

Hold both chains against each other, maybe the links on the new one are shorter?

Have you laid the new and the old chain out next to each other?

If they are the same length, this is some serious mindfuckery.

If not, but they have the same number of links, the chain must be the wrong size/pitch or whatever.

all i can think is that the previouse owner possibly has let the chain stretch to max adustment then taken a couple of links out to get it shorted and back down the adjustment? if you get me

I'll have to have a good look at the two chains and check the pitch in the morning now (going out tonight).

The box reckons it's a 530/112 which everywhere says is the right size for my bike, but may be the wrong thing in the box... you never know.

They may have the same amount of links but the old one will be stretched.

Double check the sprockets.

If the chain is the same length. The chain maybe routed under a bolt, under the swing arm that you can't really see.

I've done it a few times and felt like a plank afterwards.

I had the same problem changing my YBR 125 sprockets/chain today

Exactly the same problem

Look at my diagram, I had to pull the chain off the sprocket and pull it down like it is in the picture, connect the links and turn the wheel so it puts your chain on like you would a bicycle chain. If it works, your chain will be tight as fuck and if it's anything like my YBR you won't be able to slacken it, your wheel might be a bit off balance too :l

Just going to have to ride with a tight chain for a few hundred miles then it'll slacken itself out

By doing that you run the risk of wrecking the output shaft bearings, and then you will be in deep shit.

There is a reason for leaving that bit of slack in the chain.

See if you can get some extra links from somewhere.

I had the same problem when fitting a +3 sprocket to my mates bike. He went to a bike shop and got some extra links which we added onto his chain.

Found what I was doing wrong... not counting the links on the old chain carefully enough.... ABS Bandits have 116 links..... but it was too late anyway as I didn't count until after the chain came up short.

Back off to the shop today to chat about them knowing what to sell me
