Hello all

I'm thinking about buying an FZR1000 but the seller says that the EXUP cables have been removed. He says it doesnt affect the bike running...

a) What are EXUP cables ?
b) Am I worried if they are missing ?

Thanks
Stu Very Happy

Hi

EXUP is the exhaust valve. It is a valve in the bottom of the exhaust that rotates to open and close, with a servo motor under the seat to operate it. Couple of cables go from the servo to the valve.

Chances are it the cables have been removed then the valve has seized. It is there to allow an exhaust design and cam profile set up for high revs power, which normally knackers up bottom end / midrange. The valve opens at high revs to allow things to work properly, while at low revs it is closed to screw up the pressure waves that otherwise knacker up the lower rpm power.

If the valve isn't working then it will either be open or closed. If open it will be missing a load of bottom end power. If closed it will be missing a load of top end power.

All the best

Keith

Many thanks. I can get both servo and cables for <£50 on ebay so I'll take that into account when I'm haggling

Risers would have to go Wink

Alternatively you could also have the carbs rejetted and put free-flowing exhaust headers on there.

This would eliminate the seizure problems that exups are reknowned for.

Bear in mind that EXUP parts are VERY VERY expensive. I bought two new graphite bushes, a grease filled bearing and a tiny metal gasket for my FZR400RR EXUP valve, and it came to £100!!

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It is the valve seizing that is the normal problem, and even when not seized getting the valve out of the exhaust isn't easy.

All the best
