Need to change front tyre and brake pads...

The frigging pinch bolts on the fork are seized solid...
Took it to my local garage... after they applied heat... still nothing
and the bolts are rounding off! (allen bolts)

What my next option? was thinking to put the bolt extractors...
but drilling a steel bolt... knowing the fork bottom casing is alluminium...
consequences could be disastrous...

Any help?

Allen key welded to bolt head and undo - job done. If its rounding off then the allen keys must be a very poor fit.

Are the bolts recessed inside the fork bottoms?

Allen bolts are recessed in the fork casing by 2mm.

allen key was good fit (bolt rusted) and even garage applied heat and still didn't budge...

Just had a thought... still got some caustic soda left... hmmm maybe?

Unfortunate; I was in Harrogate yesterday evening and could have brought you a selection of old ones I don't care about to try out.

Have you tried soaking it in WD40?
Giving it some decent whacks with a hammer?
Doing it up slightly first?
Freezer spray to go with the heat?

G have a look at this... this is the pigging problem...

Tried heat... wd40... doing it up slightly... hammer... tapped it gently... tap it vigourosly... nothing.

I am considering using caustic soda on it

I suspect the problem there is not the threads, but the caps binding in the corroded alloy. I suggest trying freeze and release on it.

I'd ideally try some heat with some freeze and release.

Doubt it's worth it, but if you can make it over to Keighley in an evening, don't mind giving a hand to see what we can do with stuff I've got here.

I would still weld an old allen key with that.

don't use caustic soda, it will eat the alloy. But as others have said, try freeze ad release spray, and loads of wd-40 or plus gas etc.

I think the only way on that is to weld and undo........its looks like its laughing at you.

Now that I've said that, realised I'm actually busier than I thought.
Any time this evening is fine, or later tomorrow evening.

Drop me a PM.

Failing everything. I once had a similar arrangement and landed up hacksawing them in half through the split in the bottom of the fork leg. I then levered the bits with the head in out by hammering an old screwdriver in the gap I just sawed then used the hole they left as a drill guide.

As it happens, after only a few turns of the drill, it grabbed the stubs and screwed them all the way out through the other side.

I preferr the idea of welding an allen key to them though.

Clear case for using an air impact wrench in the first place as soon as you/they realised they weren't going to move.
