Hi all, i'll start by expaining the problem because it may not be the clutch that's the problem.
Recently ive been needing to take up the slack on the clutch cable because after a while of riding the lever goes really slack, I adjust the cable at the lever end or gearbox end and all is good for a little while longer. Unfortunately this no longer works as I have adjusted it but now when you pull in the clutch in, it's like there's no more adjustment and the lever stops.
This is a little strange as the bike has only done 4k and it's a 2004 k4 model and I would have thought the clutch would have lasted a lot longer? I don't ride the clutch or do anything sill that would burn it out so not really sure why it's happend.

Does it sound like I need a new clutch or could something else be the problem?
If it does need a new clutch are they hard to change? And are all 600 bandit clutches the same?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks to anyone who can shed some light on it!

Thanks, but the cable seems fine and when you pull the clutch lever in it won't pull all the way in as if the cable has gone tight and pulling what ever it pulls as far as it can?? Think I'll just have to get the cover off and have a look to see what it's pulling against.

Thanks again for your reply, hopefully it will be something easy!

I've been adjusting it where the cable goes into the casing? 10mm spanner and a 12mm lock nut? Is there another place to adjust it? Think I'll be investigating later!

Hi

Think there are 2 adjusters (not certain, Charlottes 600 Bandit has a ZZR600 clutch lever) and possibly 3. The one on the sprocket cover adjusts the free play in the actual clutch while the one on the bars adjust the free play in the cable, same for an adjust on the cable outer where it meets the sprocket cover.

Slacken off the one on the bars. Undo the lock nut on the sprocker cover adjuster (ie the one under the 1" diameter rubber cover), slacken the adjuster screw and then tighten until it just makes contact, then back off a gnats and do up the lock nut. Then adjust the cable at the bars to suit.

If you have over tightened things previously then the clutch might have been slipping for a bit and worn

All the best

Keith

Thanks for your help guys. I'll have a look tonight and try adjusting it as said above. The funny thing is the clutch has never slipped while riding, just the play in the lever would get more and more to the point where the lever is fully in but the clutch is still dragging.

Hi

Sounds like the opposite of slipping. My guess would be the lock nut on the adjuster isn't done up and the clutch is adjusting itself.

All the best

Thanks guys!! You were spot on It was the nut on the screw adjuster, it had come off completely and the screw was working itself out. All set back to normal now and the clutch works perfectly! If any of you are around the Marlborough, Swindon area I'll gladly buy you a pint!
