Just wondering about the situation about red lights as some lights dont pick me up, im from Belfast and ridiculous amount of streets are one way.

So i was out late at night, because its damn fun, and ended up having to go down a one way street (other way was M3 ,L plates) and the lights just wouldnt pick me up so after a few minutes I said **** this, kick stand down pedestrian crossing buttons pushed and away i went, could this be contested if points were given?

If you've been waiting a while, or it's a known doesn't work for bikes set of lights, there was no other traffic about, no coppers and it's safe to do so I'd just go through them.

I had it happen once with a police car behind me!
I knew the lights well, takes no more than 30s for them to change no doubt the police knew that too. I waited a minute and turned round to look at the police car. I don't remember the exact look / gesture but it was along the lines of "go on then..." so i did.

I've heard that revving your engine can help induce sufficient current through the sensor though i've never been in a position to test this.

I 've been stuck at some, I've moved my bike just over the white line, turned and beckoned the car way behind me to move up, the driver just looked at me blankly.

Don't know if they've change them, used to be in shoreham-by-sea near the harbour, bottom of kingston lane

happened to me so often, in the end I used to jump off my bike and push it along the pavement, as I only lived like 6 houses further down.

If they're induction-loop triggered, you could try sticking a big magnet on the bottom of your bike. Google will provide details.

My bikes big enough to trigger most but theres a set just up the road from home that just wont play ball and when I finish work at nights I've been known to be stuck there for ages. Its on a carriageway so I cant just turn the bike around and theres what looks like cameras attached to the top of the lights so I wont just ride through them.

If it looks like this it's just a traffic sensor, not a camera.

This works, make sure they are strong rare earth magnets. Fix it to your sump plug. It will also help collect all the floating bits of metal in the oil Very Happy

Back when I was on L's pottering around Oxford I was stuck at some lights for ages. A white van pulled up behind me and I thought I should just ride through when the traffic was clear to get out of his way.

As I rode off I could see more of the van in my mirror and noticed the big blue letters on the front saying 'POLICE'. He followed my through the red lights and I had a but-clenching ride up the road waiting to see if I got pulled over Laughing

He went a different way eventually, but that I guess the fact that it was obvious what had happened meant I got away with it.

You can see where the loop under the tarmac is most of the time so just rock your bike back and forth over it until the lights change. The sensors on the top of the lights seem to pick up my bike just fine.

I'm pretty sure there is a provision in the RTA for 'inoperative' red lights, and exception to rule that breaching a red light is an automatic failure to give way.
the 'Problem' of automatic triggered lights, is such, and particularly with temprary traffic control around road works, there is I believe an entire High-Ways Agency 'protocol' instruction for how to deal with them, both on the spot, lights not changing.... I think its something like if they have not changed within a 'reasonably period' and make suggestions, like perhaps two minutes, THEN you treat it as a faulty light, and APPLYING GROSS CAUTION, proceed, being prepared to give way... etc etc etc...
and then a whole litiany of stuff about reporting to responsible local authority, and the procedure for changing triger settings depending on th number of complains and reports of trigger failure etc....
BASICALLY.... give it a good couple of minutes... treat as uncontrolled junction, and apply caution as major hazard, BUT, important bit is you MUST complain.
If you dont complain then the responsible authority wont get the requisite number of complaints to change the trigger sensitivity, or put in timer over ride, so it switches at certain intervals regardless of trigger, 'in case'.

pft, just jump it.

As Mike says, treat it as an uncontrolled junction. Just assume that some other idiots got a green light and will come booting through at any second.

Do this:

Even if it doesn't make the lights don't change, your fellow road users will enjoy it.
