cg125 top speeda

My cg125 tops out at an indicated 55mph. It feels like its going to fall to peices at that speed too....

Im not looking to hit the ton or anything but I thought I should see closer to 65mph?

The bike pulls cleanly enough until about 45mph and then really struggles.

Its a 1993 brazil model with 23k. Prior to me getting it the bike had sat for a couple of years. I treated it to a full service, new plug, battery etc and checked the valve clearances. I havent touched the points or checked timing yet.

Carb might need cleaned? Oh and someone has drilled the airbox :s

I've no experience with the CG's top speed, but when you said someones drilled the air box, that set the alarms off. The carb is most likely still set up for the factory air box, and depending on the extent of the drilling in the air box, the mixture might could be off near the top end. If you want to check this you can run the bike at the indicated 50-55 mph for as long as you dare, stop and immediately check the colour of the plugs.

An incline and head wind will affect a 125, but I would have thought it would hit 60-65 on the flat.

my 92 cg with 35k miles got up to 65 quite easy and nothing more

i had a cb 125 that would top out at 50 mph, i changed the oil and ran some redex through with the fuel. After that i could just about get 70 mph on a good warm day downhill. Maybe you could try it, it cant hurt and if you dont get a better top speed at least you've given the engine a good internal clean

I took it another run this afternoon and managed just under an indicated 60 on the flat so maybe im just not working it hard enough!

ye i did london to bristol alot on my little cg back in the day. although mine is a little newer (2000 i think) with 15,000mileage roughly, i do indeed recall the crazy vibration of the bike and reaching at least 65... i think my record was 69mph downhill

...and that was with an overloaded bike!


your speed should reach at least 60 i would have thought, but the vibration is standard, and kind of reminds you that you shouldnt really be pushing the bike that hard. plus you cant see shit in your mirrors theyre vibrating so much hehe.

some may disagree here, but i was told by my mechanic mate that you should keep 125's under 55mph, as when you start sort of 'touring' on those sort of bikes, youre poutting stress on the engine that it wasnt designed for.
...but hey, that may be part-bullshit, despite it being quite logical!

without doubt, the CG is a marvellous bike though!!
ive neglected mine for 8months, still with a dead battery, and it started first time! ...can run on oil much longer than you would thnk too.

Good job on checking the valve clearances.

Yup, definitely do a plug chop to check the mixture at full throttle.

Also, are you getting any smoke in the exhaust? Your piston rings may be shagged. You can get a compression tester for about a tenner to check.

My Mates CG can do about 85+ we did the highly scientific experiment of having a car stay behind him, the car was doing 81/82 and he was still pulling away on our local A road at 3am on a sunday morning.... So it is possible to have a CG that does a fudging awesome speed for a 4 stroke. I have a CB125 tdc from 1982, and that can do about 70. In the sense that i overtook on set A road, my friends car who was doing 65.

So, as long as they are really well looked after, oil changes every month and new spark plugs every couple hundered miles, they can do a surprising lot. Im only a fair weather biker who bought his little 125 for a laugh, hoping to restore it.

At the moment, its a bit of a heap with a real leaky carb and head gasket =(

The95th: your mates CG125 doesn't do 85+mph unless it has been tuned and is likely no longer a 125.

My early model jap CG would hit an indicated 85mph down hill with my head in the tank...mind you i did gear it up loads and had the old type slide carb and less restrictive exhaust (poker mod) Mine had been standing for a couple of years before I bought it and it took about 3 weeks hard thrashing to get it to pull properly..think it had a serious case of glazed bore.

you might want to give (now dont laugh) using shell v power in it as i know a lot of people who try it in 4t singles that say it makes a real difference...i think the burn rate is a bit faster due to a % of ethanol in it. worth a punt and will help clean the fuel system at least.
