PostPosted: 17:43 - 13 Jun 2011    Post subject: GPZ500 barend fitting? Reply with quote

On my gpz I would like to fit a pair of barends, just to tidy up the end of the grips to be honest.

However, I have come to fit them and noticed that there is a plate/tube of steel welded into the end of the bars. How would I go about removing this and what is it for? (the steel is thick and the weld is very good)

Also, if I cannot remove it, how would I go about fitting barends into my bars?

Many thanks,
Mike

It sounds like they're pre-weighted. If the bar-ends you have bought are purely for cosmetic reasons then there are a few ways you could make them fit. If you're just not happy with the bars on there then a set of renthals is only £25.

Do you have any ideas how I might be able to install them? As I can't fit renthals because my bars are clip-on style :/

Hi

Depends on how the bar ends you have bought attach.

You will probably need to chop away the end of the grips (if the original ones), then drill out the end of the bars.

If you want normal bars then I suspect you can buy adapters that bolt on instead of the "clip ons". LSL used to make them but don't know if they still do.

All the best

Keith

Thanks, the bar-ends I have attach like these ones; https://images.esellerpro.com/2319/I/928/50/BE-101.jpg

And I don't have the original grips on, so there is no end to the grips so they don't need cutting. But I don't fancy swapping the bars as I like the originals.

Do you now how thick/long the welded in bit would be? So far I've drilled about 1/2 inch and I'm getting nowhere near through it Sad

Personally, I'd have cut off the external piece of the bar end and just drilled and tapped into the solid piece inside the bar to take the Allen bolt.

That's if it was just a cosmetic thing.

The only way to fit them properly is to keep drilling as you are, to a depth that will accept the bar ends.

You have 2 options
1: drill out the bar ends to fit the size of the bolt used with your bar-ends then use a tap and die set to cut a thread into the drilled out end.

2: Buy some 2nd gen (1994-) clip-ons, which have the fittings already in the ends.

Hi

Think you will have to drill away. However doing this you are removing the weight of the steel and replacing it with the light alloy bar end.

All the best

Keith

In all honesty then, I'm tempted to just make up a bmx plastic barend and see if I can make that fit without drilling it out.

I might have to play a little bit of 'captain bodge-it', but it should tidy up the ends of my grips Wink I hope...

Hi

Or just buy some original style grip which cover the ends of the bars.

All the best

Keith
