Every year the VJMC hold a small show? and bike jumble not far from me in Brantham in Suffolk.
There were some great bikes there including FS1E`s, H1750 triple and a very sweet old Honda CB 175 twin.

As this old Sachs that I`m getting back together is nearly finished, mind you there`s always something that needs doing, I thought I`d look for a new project (possibly, maybe).

I found a MZ Simson 50 that looked like it could do with a new home and looked like it was within my capabilities to fix.
Dont forget that this was an old and tatty 50cc moped.
He wanted nealy £500 for it Shocked Evil or Very Mad Rolling Eyes
Needless to say I did`nt buy it.

I tried to buy a few other bits, and the money these sharks want for this stuff is just outrageous Evil or Very Mad

I know fleece-bay can be a pain but at least if you look hard enough you can pick up a bargain here and there.

Do other people find that bikle/auto jumble to be a bit of a rip-off or is it just me?

Definitely, a couple of years back the rip off merchants at Enfield Motor Paegent wanted several quid more for some battered old Landrover switches than brand new ones from specialist classic Landrover motor factors.

Only buy from an auto jumble if you know what something's really worth, or you're really desperate.

Bargains at auto jumbles are few and far between. The majority of sellers are dealers and therefore know how far they can push a buyer to get the best price.

I find forums run by owners clubs and ebay better for picking up stuff.

They also know punters at shows tend to have cash burning a hole in their pockets, absolutely desperate to buy that spark plug for their 1923 Velocette, and rip them off accordingly.

You`re dead right about a lot of them being dealers as this fella had his sign written van behind him.
Thing is he has now done himself out of some business, I know who he is and out of principle I will never do business with him.

If when I asked "how much" he had given me a genuine price that was fair instead of seeing how much he thought he could get out of me we might of done business.
Of course that would of meant that I might of gone back to him for other spares and parts he might of had.

I absolutely hate people who try to rip me off.
Yes I am tight but I have been known to spend on the right things Smile

breaking bikes is hard and is goverend by the fact you guys ( joe public ) want top doller for your wrecks/write offs etc
if you go on ebay and price up every part to build 1 bike say zx6r g2 for eg youll see that these "over priced parts" in fact mostly cost less than you can pick up a compleat bike for ! we all need to make a living

I very much doubt that. Maybe with the right contacts but not for the average Joe. Even then the bike you built would likely be pretty rough looking. maybe if you got bargains on fairly big chunks like a complete front end it might be possible but people are usually asking daft prices for things.

I hated the phase ''it owes me £xxx'', it is only worth what someone wants to pay.

Money`s tight all round and everybody is feeling the pinch.
Sure breakers have to make a dollar as well as the rest of us.
However this was not a ZX6r it was an old little MZ simpson 50cc moped.

If he had asked £500 for an old tatty ZX6r in a similar condition to the MZ simpson moped I would of thought that was a fair price.

I just think he was being greedy asking that much for a little moped.
Hey-ho I`ll look for something else Smile

I've been to the Kempton Park one and found it pretty good. Only a skin diver to take a trip round.

I've bought the odd few bits, I just found the trick is to stand looking at the stuff you want and say nothing. If he speaks before you do, you know that he's more keen to sell it than you are to buy it.
