PostPosted: 14:40 - 27 Jun 2011    Post subject: Help with choosing an upright bike Reply with quote

Due to an off incident whilst riding pillion on my partners bike some 4 years ago I have degenerative disc disease in my lower vertebrae which can be extremely painfull at times, noticably more so when im riding my bike for more than 30ish minutes. I currently have a Honda NC30 but have decided that although I love it more than life itself I cannot take the pain anymore and I think that selling it and getting an upright is the way forward as it will hopefully relieve the pain if im not riding bent over (cue the crude remarks Thumbs Up)

I will have about £2000 to spend, dont really care what cc it is but I really like sporty looking bikes and I cant really think of any Shocked

Any helps would be gratefully received Cool

You'll get a decent hornet for that kind of money.

Sporty for a nekkid, and sound and look quite good. reliable etc.

https://www.wallpaperpimper.com/wallpaper/Bikes/Honda/Honda-Hornet-900-Blue-1-PDI4PNZ28E-1024x768.jpg

I'd have one if i had the money.

Can get them naked

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-CB600F-2-HORNET-2002-02-/260802110116?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3cb90462a4

And faired.

Or you could get a bandit, which is a basic all rounder. Seen a few people talking about them and although they are a tad bland, and quite heavy... they are good bikes.

You really need to get test riding if you've got a mongo back mate. It's the only way to tell. Start with a CBR600F, if that's too uncomfortable then I think you need to stay away from sports bikes and look more at CB1000's or Hornets and stuff.

Not sure about money but maybe try an SV 650/1000, Bandit 600/1200, Tuono, Hornet. All sporty and are upright, ish Razz

Can you not spend the £2000 on fixing your back privately? I know you said disease but can't they put anything artificial in there?

Thumbs Up

The obivous choice is a naked 600 (hornet, fazer etc etc) but I'd be tempted to totally embrace the uprightiness and get something totally different like a TDM900 or even a supermoto like the DRZ400SM.

I think I would have the same problem with a cbr, really looking at an upright or I would just keep the nc30.

I quite like the look of the Triumph Triple R, but they are too many bucks!!

Try one. There is a vast world of difference in the riding position.

Hold on, you think the Hornet is ugly and you like the look of the Triumph street triple?

How about a speed four? though they aren't upright as stock, it's not hard to stick a set of renthals on it. Look kinda the same as a triple and you can get them for around what you've got to spend.

Thumbs Up

I dont particually want people digging round my spine - I know someone who is now paralysed from the same operation I could have Shocked

The Speed 4 is really nice cheers dunc Il look into that one Thumbs Up I do have a friend who has a cbr so I could have a go on that...... I do like the look of them too. Not really a supermoto kinda gal however.

The problem is that im a fussy fucker lol so it will probably take me ages to find one that ticks all the boxes.

Was just about to suggest this. They come with clip-ons as standard, but you can get bar risers and renthals for them pretty easily. They are fantastic bikes too. Proper sports bike without the fairings.

You need to be a bit careful and speak to your consultant or osteopath before you make any kind of choice.

Only because on a sportier bike the riding position is designed to be a sort of crouch and a lot of your body weight is supported on your wrists and legs. On an upright you are, literally, upright and this can put pressure on the back as it has no support. Particularly the lower back as the force vector is straight down your spine into the seat if that makes sense.

It's probably worth you sitting on or even better testing the sort of bike you think you want before you commit any money to it as you could find it is actually worse than your NC30.

Yes Agreed. Some very upright bikes actually put more pressure on the lower back than sportsbikes do.

Hence the CBR600F would be a good call as it is the best compromise yet made between sporty and upright.

YOU CAN'T STREETFIGHTER A NAKED BIKE.

Those are 'modified'. i prefer the term 'ruined' but each to their own.

The TT600/Speed four has a pretty much identical riding position to the CBR600f, IIRC. so the S4 could be a good choice. will get a newer Speed four for the money of an older CBR.

You and everyone else knows what I mean. Modified to look like a streetfightered bike which is another word for modified.

I have Renthals on my S4 It wasn't mega cheap to do, but I did do it the expensive way, with LSL Risers and All Renthal Gear, I also had to get a Longer Clutch Cable it owes me about £350. But it did totally Transform the bike.

As to other suggestions, TDM is great very comfortable the problem is unless you are 5'9+ I reckon you will be too short for it.

I would personally choose a Fazer 600. I think they look better than the hornet and they have much better brakes.

Yes I think Chris-Red and I are on the same page here...

Why not try a speed four, then if your back causes you gyp you can try the LSL bar riser kit? I had a speed four and it was a great bike until I crashed it.

Having test rode the new Honda Crossrunner (crossdresser) i can comfirm that it handles incredibly well... bordering on sportsbike corner holding ability with the benefits of a sit up machine... go try one out!

I'm just going to echo what some others have said about upright bikes. My XJ 750 is very upright with its high handlebars and, while it's very comfy, the part of my body that aches on a long journey is the small of my back. I'm actually going for some clip-ons in the near future, as apart from the bars I'm happy with the riding position.

er6-f, can be very upright if you want

Youll have to look around to get it for 2 grand but if you keep an eye out there are some real bargains going.
