Hello there,

right when i got this bike it was starting on the button all the time for about 3 days straight. After leaving the bike standing for 3 days i came back to it started it up it coughed for a second or 2 then died. Now the bike will not start what so ever.

I've got a good spark and fuel. Disconnected the side stand kill switch and all the other are working fine. The starter motor turns the engine over, when checking the sparkplugs I was still getting a spark when the side stand kill switch was off and on, can someone shed some light on that ?

The bike will back fire after i try to turn it over for a while, but the plugs will go black, but its not firing up.

I've taken the plugs out they were covered in fuel, clean the black off them and still nothing. The battery is charged and has been recharged after trying to turn it over, even tried starting with the 400 battery and another 125 attached. All the starter solenoids and relays are working fine.

Ive tried starting on all different chokes but yet nothing and all of this was after the bike started first time on the button

At the moment im out of ideas to try and need some help figuring this one out. . . .

Thanks,
Luke Sad

The sidestand switch will only operate when you stick it in gear I think, should cut the engine out.

I would make sure you're battery is super charged, the bandits seem to need a really fast crank if they haven't been run for a while.
I would take your plugs out and give them a really good clean up, heat them up with a blowtorch and try starting it again while the plugs are still warm. When the plugs are out crank it over for a second just to clear the cylinders.

Could try that before looking at anything more serious.

I'd try a new set of plugs.

Did this today, completely drained the engine.

Took the plugs out drained the carbs and pumped the rest through, tickle charged the battery and cleaned the plugs. Left it to dry. This finally got the bike showing some life !! it wasnt much but it did try to fire on a couple cylinders but wouldnt on all 4. Im now back to where i started but its a good sign.

My next step is gonna be some new plugs and ht leads. If that doesnt get it firing properly should i consider new coils ?

I'd get new plugs first, wouldn't bother with the ht leads unless you need them.

yeah sounds like plugs, well, likely to be that than leads or coils I would think.. I've got 2 bandit4's and they both needed 4 new plugs - not that cheap as plugs go either! Sad

You can do a test on the coils, well, check the primary and secondary resistances

Primary (+tap to -tap) = 2.5 - 3.8 ohms.
Secondary (plug cap to plug cap) = 30 - 50 kohms.

It's unlikely they'll be dodgy but you can check the resistances just in case.

If you can find a compression tester while you've got the tank off again it's worth giving it a test just to make sure.

Standard = 142-206 psi
Limit = 114 psi
Difference = 28 psi
