PostPosted: 10:31 - 19 Jul 2011    Post subject: Biking OCD Reply with quote

A few years ago, i used to ride out with a group of mates, one of whom had an NC30. We'll call him Ian, because that's what his name is.

Ian had a really strange habit of lifting up his elbows so he could get a better view in his mirrors. Right elbow up, check mirror, right elbow down, left elbow up, check mirror, left elbow down. It was real OCD behaviour and it usually started within the first 10 minutes of a ride out.

The longer the ride was, the more frequent his elbow flapping became. It got so noticeable that as soon as he started flapping, everyone riding behind him would start parodying him with chicken impressions (i.e. flapping pretend wings, head popping/bobbing, and when stopped at lights the occasional clucking noise or full-on cock-a-doodle-do).

I can only imagine that (to the casual observer) our behaviour must have looked slightly unusual - a long line of motorcycles flying past at speed, with all the riders pretending to be chickens.

My biking OCD included:
When getting ready, the LH item of a pair must always be put on first - left boot first, left earplug first, left glove first.

Constantly checking i was in 1st gear when stopped at traffic lights.

Constantly checking i was in 6th gear when on the motorway (at least once every mile)

So fellow-BCFers, what (if any) are your strange bike-related compulsions?

Constantly cancelling indicators, and worrying that I have a puncture (sometimes stopping to check).

Left glove has to go on first - OCD to the point that if I do put the right one on first I will take it off so I can put them on left-then-right Rolling Eyes

My kick stand is up isnt it...

Im sure it is...

I better check....

Yep, I moved my foot down there and cant feel it.

Oh god what if its fallen off?

I better look.

Yep still there, visual confirmation, thats good, and its up!

Up is where it should be when im moving

But what if it just fell down when I went over that bump....

I better check....

Yep still there and still up!

Great!

Ladeedaadeedaa im riding along with my stand up not a care in the world!

Ooo a left turn ahead

You know, before I get there I better check my stands up... if its down I might crash...

Yep its up! Great!

Round the corner we go and whew... That was close...

I could have crashed if my stand was down and caught on the ground!

I could have gone straight into that hedgerow

I might have killed a bird or two...

I might have died myself·..

My god... That was close...

That would be a shame being killed on the road...

I wouldn't like that...

I best check my stands up...

- checking that my pockets are zipped/poppered shut
- checking the helmet chin strap is securely done up
- checking with my left heel that my centre stand is still in place (even though this has NEVER been a problem, I'm still paranoid about it dragging/catching the road)
- checking the rear tyre before and/or after almost every ride for any stones, metal etc

Every time I put my gloves on its like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYPs91GnkcI saying 'groovy' is like amen to christians to me.

I do excessively cancel indicators sometimes I've even nearly crashed on corners because i'm so busy cancelling them as if it's more important Rolling Eyes

Not so much OCD towards the bike, that I can think of.

But if the missus is driving, she'll have to check the house is locked near on 50 times before we go. Rolling Eyes

I think my OCD quirks on the bike are similar to others, I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I constantly press my cancel indicator button when I'm riding along.

I always reset my trip before starting a ride, I get really annoyed with myself if I forget to reset it, or if I forget to reset it when I fill up with fuel. And I count up miles as I go along.

I keep checking I'm in first gear at traffic lights.

I always clean my bike after every ride before it goes back in the garage.

I did the chicken flapping gig for a while as my mirrors were shit and that was the only way I could see behind me, sorted that now but still do it by accident every now and then.

Otherwise it is always checking I'm in first at a stop, checking my bag is zipped up and I check that the garage is locked a few times a day.

Thank fuck for that. I thought it was just me.

I always have to check if I'm in 5th on the motorway. Especially after riding the CB. If your trying to find 6th when you've only 5, your gonna be lookin for a looong time.

I do the door locked thing as well. Embarassed

Back door locked. Front door locked.

Is the back door locked (F*CK!!!!!) Better check.

Pockets zipped up are my only OCD and I check them about 10 times whilst riding to make sure they're zipped up. I lost a phone and a wallet before from not zipping them up so I'm paranoid about it now.

Have to put my left glove on first. No other way to do it unfortunately. Physically I can but mentally I can't choose to put on my right glove first. The idea of doing it makes me feel put off. I've stopped before to do up a zip and took my left glove off to do it. To put my left glove back on I had to take my right one off too.

At one stage I began to put left boot on first as well but I've stopped myself from picking up that habit.

I also do the chicken wing dance on my bike, started off as looking at my mirrors but then turned a way of keeping my upper body loose.

yep obsessive pocket checking here too... and I have this habit of forgetting doing up the very top stud on my jacket and trying to do that was hard work... used to be on the zxr400.. then I got the xrv... now I just sit there... mirrors? sod mirrors (joke!).. I'm above all cars, seeing miles ahead, and seen from miles behind.. king of the road (until a lorry pulls up Very Happy )... I just turn my head slightly for mirrors...
