yamaha rxs100 - skipping noise

i noticed this a few days ago, as you pull away the bike judders and makes a skipping noise, sounds like the same area as the front sprocket but with the cover off there is plenty of meat on the teeth and the chain doesn't skip as it turns.

once the cover is off the clutch is no longer active as the cable runs through the sprocket cover to a lever. i had to bump the bike without the clutch; starting like this the problem doesn't seem to happen at all.

Would the problem be the clutch? or maybe gears skipping - but i dont have a problem once the bike is moving or when i change gear?

Sounds like a slapping loose chain. Your clutch cable when pulled in should free the bike enabling you to push the bike, and then if you release the clutch the bike should stop. Adjust the clutch cable so that there is a little play at the lever before it engages.

The juddering could mean low clutch plates, does this happen when changing gear? Does the clutch take a while to grip sometimes.

Is the front sprocket properly fixed to the drive shaft? Are the splines on the drive shaft knackered?
