I'm on a budget, I'm going to be spending about £550 on my entire set;

Lid - 100
Jacket - 125 (Textiles)
Gloves - 50
Trousers - 150 (Leathers)
Boots - 120

Tomorrow I'm going into Hein Gericke to try on some helmets. My budget is £100, so I will be trying on helmets in the price range of £60-£100. I will buy the helmet that has the best fit. Say if that was £60, do you think it might not give enough protection? Obviously the head is very delicate, but when you see people that have been seriously injured from an off, it's usually other parts of their body that has taken the injury e.g. broken bones, even with full leathers.

Also, can anyone recommend any cheap Hein Gericke helmets?

Its been said many times on this forum but just to make the point clear.

Buy a lid that fits you properly and fuck how much it costs.

A £60 lid that fits properly will protect you more than a £300 that doesnt.

Personally I've never spent more than £100 on a lid. Confused

If it sets your mind at rest google "Sharp Tests" and find out what ratings some of the cheaper makes have.........

+1

In fact, don't think I've spent more than £50 on one.

It's all about the fit.

There are plenty in that price range. With the more expensive lids, its more the quality of the air vents and visor mechanism you notice, or extras, for example my dads arai came pinlock ready with a visor included.

HG are pretty good usually for helping with finding a good fit.

Go to bike shops for fitting, by from t'interwebs. My OH wears a Nitro lid because it fits her. Got a good sharp rating, too, but it was ft that we mainly went for. Cost about £60, from what I remember.

That, my friend, is NOT buying on a budget. That's just not splurging unnecessarily. You can easily get the lid for under 100, a jacket for under 100, gloves for under 20, pants for 40 (granted, leathers will cost more) and boots for under 100.

I got my lid given (caberg J1) but have tried and liked quite a few cheap lids. (I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand lid. In my case I knew the previous owner very well and he retired from biking due to a back operation) Cheap new is better than expensive with ??? history

My jacket is a Kawasaki branded racing jacket, bought from ebay, mint condition for £46

My pants are textile cordura waterproofs with knee, hip and lower back protection, shit loads of pockets and vents etc. and a winter lining. £40 off ebay brand new.

My boots were £57 but they're still en route so they may be shite, if I remember I'll report back (bought from J&S on ebay)

My gloves were given (Akito Carbon SP). They retail at £40 but I've worn a friend's £15 gloves, with all the same protection yet they were MORE comfortable than mine in all weathers. Cooler in the sun but waterproof opposed to the akitos bullshit claims.

Protection is standard. Additional comfort costs.

I will probably endup spending alot more than £200 next time i get a helmet.
I'm after something light and with a pinlock system.
Lightness costs.

Think i paid £45 for the FM when i first started...i could virtually spin it around on my head. Doh!
Next one is my Caberg Zonda. Fits really well with sunvisor. and can be stripped out for a wash. Too heavy, and too noisy. Cost about a ton.

As a rough rule. You want to be able to feel the helmet touch all of your head...sounds daft and can take abit to know what the feck i'm on about, if you're a newbie that is.
You should look like a hamster and not be able to poke a finger in the gap. e.g the forehead area.

I've got a GMAC Maxx in black.

Its got all the safety marks on it and was a good fit for me and best of all they only cost £30.

I suppose, you only need a helmet if you come off, so never had the chance to test it yet.

Or you can go with the philosophy of buy once and last 5 years. Get one that fits your head is the key message here. The more you spend, the more refined and better finished the lid will be. I don't want to open myself to subjective opinions or have a discussion, but trust me, when you've spent over £2k on lids over the last 7 years, you tend to develop an idea of what's good and what's not. As with riding, you have your aspirational bikes and influences, so the same applies to riding kit. Does a £100 lid perform better than a £600 Arai? SHARP tests seem to think so, my neck, ears and eyes would like to disagree with that! And because I've crashed in the kit I wear, I know what to expect.

Given your budget go for these features if you want safety:

1) Composite/fibreglass helmet - longer shelf life and less susecptible to UV degrdadation than Polycarbonate helmets. They are tougher and more imapct resistant that PC helmets - want to argue with me? Fine, I'll take some specimens and take some hardness measurements drop weight tests and tensile tests using the instrom at work shall I? You won't know what happens with a polycarbonate shell because they ping back into their original position after experiencing an impact/trauma.

2) Double D straps - if you want your helmet to fit correctly every time, it's a lot better than a seat belt style closure

I would certainly push your budget slightly higher and get yourself a HJC FG15. If it was good enough for spies, there are plenty of these lids knocking about for £100-£130 in a variety of colours. (FG denotes fibreglass).

If this fits your head, then you're onto a winner!

actually, make it £85! A bargain! HJC do make affordable, VERY good quality lids - so much so that I still have mine from 7 years ago! (I had the then-flagship HCJ AC10).

By all means, extend your budget and blow your load on an Arai or a Shoei and you won't regret it! Wink

If you are going hein gericke the Box Bx1 is £45 on the website and that has a 4/5 star rating I believe from the sharp test I checked as I was curious the other day.

https://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/helme/box-bx-1-black-18081.html

It may look extremely simple and boring but if you care about the safety tests it might be a good buy for you if it fits Thumbs Up

My main riding gear is budget, all decent quality comfortable stuff and cost a damn site less than that:

Helmet - £20 Arai Rapide 2, second hand, ebay.
Jacket - £20 Akito leather jacket, brand new, ebay
Gloves - £12 Goretex lined CS95 leather gloves - Army Surplus
Trousers - £15 Leather trousers, auto jumble
Boots - £25 British Army cold weather boots, Army Surplus

So full gear for £100 as opposed to 500!

I've never spent more than £70 on a lid, and never more than £60 on a brand new one. Like others have said, it's definitely the fit that's important.

What he said Thumbs Up

Also, if you are into spending lots on a helmet and you are not a complete fashion victim [1], the big brands with last years (or the year before's) designs are usually significantly cheaper.

[1] Like my ex boss, who would buy 1-2 new top brand lids every year because "It's this year's colours".

Like others have said, kit on a budget is ebay's speciality. £40 managed to get me a complete textile suit in good nick a few months ago and if you go for less popular colourways you can get some serious bargains.

Having said that though, I'd buy a lid brand new purely so you know exactly what the fit will be like. I had a £200 budget for a first helmet and ended up buying a Hein Gericke BX-1 anyway simply because it was the best fitting helmet for me. When you buy on ebay, you simply don't know how the fit will be until it arrives in the post. Also, you've got no idea whether it's been crashed in or even just dropped on some concrete, compromising it's ability to protect you.

My Arai RX7RR was one of the worst lids I've had for vent covers etc falling off. Most expensive lid I ever bought (and it was on offer too.)

As I've said before, I'm pretty sure the Caberg Justissumo isn't Composite/fibreglass, yet I found it actually crashed very well.
It's not all about figures, as you said in the paragraph before Wink.

A lot of new 'seat belt' ones use a ratchet system.

Terrible if it doesn't fit his head. I bet Spies can get his modified for free to fit, if it IS the same lid Smile.

I've got 4 lids ranging from £25, up to £200.
The more expensive lid was my AVG Airtech, bought it about 5 years ago now, and it's still going strong. It's a sports bike lid, and including the tinted visor, I think it cost me just shy of £200 back in the day.
I got this one because it fitted my head perfectly.

My MX lids both cost me under £40. One was £25, and one was £45. The £25 lid is made by Wulfsport, and although it looks cool etc, it's very polystyrene constructed inside, and it squeaks a bit as you move it around on your head etc. Not the most comfortable of helmets either.

The other lid I have, is an enduro / supermoto lid. Peak like an MX, but has a built in visor.
This cost me just over £100, but it was on a 50% off sale, couldnt find it under £200 anywhere else.
The only reason it was this expensive, is because not many companies make them, and the £49 wulfsport one was not something I wanted to buy after my experience with my £25 wulfsport helmet, and the poor lining.
