Possible?
Will be trading up from the CBR125 soon and this was just one of my thoughts. IF it is possible, what sort of things could i expect to find?
Am just thinking in biggest bang for buck to be honest, would be tempted for bigger sized engine as im not fussed what style of bike it is aslong as its not a cruiser type
Only thing that comes to mind is the early CBR1000.
Thoughts, links and suggestions most welcome ____________________ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OPv5mDPQ14

You'll struggle to get an early blade for that money. Might be possible to get a rough R1 street fighter. Probably pick up a tatty ZX9R, or ZZR1100 for that sort of money. ____________________ My Flickr |

3rd on the VTR. Mine cost me £950.
They may not be to everyones taste (G ) and they are far from the fastest thousand cc bikes out there. Less power than a decent new 600 sports bike if truth be told.
But.
They pull like a train with low and midrange grunt and they are lots of fun. They also have a slightly more upright riding position and arent as cramped as the outright sports bikes. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

Old CBR1000 can be had for 1000 in fair nick.
FZR1000, maybe early thunderace, FJ1200, some GSXR1100s, BMW K100, K1100, ZZR1100, ZX10 (the old one before any retards start), GPz900R, GPz1000RX, GPz1100S
all can be found in that price range. Probably others too.
Heres a cheap'un

cheap because they werent trendy rather than actually having any real issues. ____________________ Some shite cruiser. Now with guns and FREEDOM! |

Trawl evil-bay; there is actually quite a bit out there.
From Honda in the last thirty five years:
CBX-6... even the fully faired 'uni-track' tourer vrsions would be out of reach!
CB900... possibly a project
CB1100R... you're joking
GL1000... projects only
VF1000F..... Oh! I have on of these! VERY under rated. Usually by folk that have had little or nothing to do with them. MONSTER engine, with 'only' 115 claimed bhp, but ALL of it wher you want it in the mid range! If you avoid th optimists claiming them to be desirable classics, and dont expect somthing concourse, they do crop up in budget, and they are a lot of bike, with a lot of charecter. but they are not as 'easy' handling or bullet proof as more contmprary kit, and a nightmar to self spanner!
Jelly-mold CBR-1000's come up quit frequntly under a grand, oftyen in fair nick. Not AS much bang for your buck though. Early ones chucked out 125 DIN, later ones were strangled to Euro-freindly 100DIN, less than many older 750's! Bit of a grunt monster on low down torque though. Tough old boot, but fat and ugly to my sens of asthtics and a bland blamange to ride with little soul or charecter, compared to other alternatives.
CBR900 Fire Blade Early ones ar now getting classic attension. Later ones still out of budget. You may get project or low rent 'fighter for your money though.
Used to see Pan-Euro's coming up at around the grand.... these days though ones worth having are over budget.
My top tip would be ZZR1100
Just nick budget if you take something a little care worn.... probably the best bet for 'dependable' low buck, big bang thrills.
It WAS the 'fastest' production bike in the world, until the Busa & Bird came along, and its STILL not far off, and 'more' than most would want to regularly toy with!
Another one, is the RF900... lot of bike for the money, and slightly tattier examples fall in budget, but take it or leave it (personally I'd rather lave it!) styling, and not so great finish. Owners get pasionate about them (My eldest is on his second!) but I find it hard to be even mildly enthusiastic. Yes, nice, fast, competant, comfy, great allrounder, under rated, undr valued, BUT thy just 'lack' something..... they are the bike you buy with your head, not your heart! ZZR for the same money at least has that patina of lost glory!
The less desirable Suzuki GSX-F1100 'Katana' used to pop up in the bargain basement.... the renound engin, in higher stat of tune than the bandit, but not as sought after as oil-boiler gixers... dont know if any of them would pop up in budget.
FZR-EXUP? Highly rated in its day, could sneak one in under your budget if you search hard enough, but they have a fair few known bug bars in the exhaust department, and as an aspirational bike when new, are now sort of sought after, so you wont find a rally good example under budget.
BMW K1000...... daftly not that expensive, and again, older ones, with BMW build quality keeping them pretty tidy, and BMW owner attitude looking after them, tending to keep them pretty sound, and a lot of bike for the money.... but TuV happy 100 DIN they aren't much of a big bang....
Triumph Daytona 1000 Googlie in the pack! Dont OFTEN come up at all, but occassionally do for 'sensible' money. 1000cc short stroke 'four' they had very short model life, ovr shaddowd by the 'diffrentness' of the tripples, being suprcded very quickly by the Daytona 900... In bright yellow, like the press launch dmonstrator, its a classic in waiting, likely to apreciate when pople hark back to 'relaunched' Bloor Trumpets, and the 'forgotten' models. Daytona 12, is much more 'bike' but not sure if you'd sneak one in under budget.
And Finally....... Yamaha FJ1200 An awful lot of bike for your dosh, these DO regularly come up under budget. An air cooled four, with advanced beam frame and monoshock rear suspnsion, it was a GREAT bike, but too little too late, and in an era of great bikes, it never made it as the hi-po street bike it was intended. Launchd as quite a sleek, sporty semi naked 1100 street-bike, grew to 1200cc and got dressd as full on tourer, at which it exclled bar its chain drive in a market that rally expected shafts. Early examples delivered 140bhp, ISTR, and were hugely powerful and flexible, BUT stiff Bimota inspired frame, low CofG, and sophisticated suspension, handling was an awful lot better than you'd expect.
In short..... yup... 1000+cc for >£1000 can be done!
And as a step up from a 125... may SOUND mad, BUT big flxible motor, with so much low down urge, actually a lot more forgiving and a lot easier to ride, and rid slowly than many 600's, which urge using the revs and egg you on to kane them, liter bike, with so much more in reserve, don't have to, and can encourage you to learn some self restraint, and look after you better..... especially as you are probably looking at older, less raucously tuned machines, and ones where the age and handling laves some, shall w say, 'rough edges' where they are slightly less than 'composed' and are likely to give you plenty of warning you are being a bit 'daft' with them rather than taking you calmly to, and beyond, th 'point of no return'.
One thing I WILL warn.... £1000 budget might gt you a 1000+cc bike..... but it WONT keep it on the road very long!
After a 125, running costs on a 'big bike' can com as something opf a shock, whn used to 70+mpg your fuel bill suddenly doubles, and after a couple of yars probably never buying a new set of tyres you find you have to buy possibly a couple of HOW FRIGGING EXPNSIVE rears, and one front, between MOT's!
Liter bikes? Well, with the power they have, and the older ones, the weight too, can be CRIPPLING on running costs.
My VF, on a good day, could return over 50 to the gallon.... but get the devil in me and it could as easily be in single figures... Back tyres, would last on average about 1500 miles, I could by restraining myself a bit get a little over 2K out of them, and I went through two fronts for three rears. Two rears also meant new rear wheel bearings, and new cush drive rubbers, and while I was at it a chain, and brake pads... I was quite light on the brakes, some VF owners reckoned on a nw set of pads every rear!
One of the reasons these bikes CAN be cheap to buy.... people that can afford to run them, can afford stuff that's newer and cheaper to run!
But.... couple on the list would buck the trend. 100bhpo K100 for instance, can be reasonably easy to live with, and had a couple of colleagues at work that racked up serious annual mileages on them, commuting and touring, and not reporting exorbitant running costs, for ALL the price of BMW spares.... but as thy (self righteously) told me, "its a BMW, parts might be expensive, but you don't need any very often!)
Needs a bit more thinking about.... I think......could work, IF you can stand the running costs, or limited mileage limits running costs.
I have a four litre Range Rover I could NO WAY afford to run as an very day car; but on limited miles 'classic' policy, and only doing a few thousand miles a year, I can tolerate the high maintnence costs, and 13mph from it, specially on 72p/l LPG.... but I have 1.4 Civic for 'running about'.... which may suggest the way a litre bike CAN be run on a shoe string, IF its not your main bike, and you have something more mundane and economical for 'grunt miles'.
So, yes, can be done, but whether its a good idea or one you can make work for you is a bit trickier to answer. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
