Yup, the TL is broke. Oh fuck.
First gear has been making some slightly strange noises, getting worse, so I took it to the shop. They've confirmed that it is 1st gear which is probably chipped a tooth. Not good.
Suzuki decided to design the engine so that it splits vertically instead of horizontally, so that it will need the top end all taking off, then down to the gearbox.
Lesson learnt? I dunno, maybe I should just stick to pushbikes

Hi
I know the TL has a dodgy gearbox reputation, but that is rediculous. Thought that engine would only have done 3000~4000 miles by now?
Do you still have the original engine for that bike as spares?
At a guess you are talking £100 for the gaskets and a fair amount of labour, plus the new gears. Might be worth dropping the engine out yourself, in which case paying for the rebuild would probably work out at under £500 (say £100 for the gears, £100 for the gaskets and around a days labour). How much is a complete 2nd hand engine?
Plenty of bike do not allow you do do the gearbox without stripping the top end off the engine (no sniggering at the back, RGV250 owners).
All the best

Eh @ Keith? It's only got and ever had one engine (as far as I know!), which has done a bit about 17,000-18,000 miles
I'm looking at how much it's going to cost total, shop is getting prices for the parts and giving an estimate for labour.
And Ian... STFU |

How about a BCF weekend project with Robby, Keith, Ste, G and myself all working on the engine to strip it down and replace the first gear. Everyone else can watch and learn (or maybe not) and make tea/coffee/coke/beer/food for the workers.
What do you reckon? ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |
