How have you cleaned the crud out of the cable?

Have you pulled the inner cable and checked its not snapped in the middle, and then greased?

Symptoms SOUND like simple case of snapped cable to me.

Speedo goes 'crazy' as the wire starts to break up & it twists and unwinds... then gives up altogether when it finally snaps.

i removed the speedo cable and inner cable and cleaned both it's not snapped i had it out and blasted it with wd40 cleaned it off and lightly LM greased it.
still no movement in the dial when i rode it dummer i got a rear paddock but not a front one could have checked to see it the cable is turning it does by hand but on a stand i would see if the speedometer gearbox was doing it's job. then i would be one step forward. will have a look over it tommorow

Is the end rounded off? If it was fretting in the drive, then they can loose thier corners and 'jump' until they completely round off, similar symptoms.

it did look a bit rounded but not spear like but not square edges it does look like this so doubt it is the cable https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Suzuki/GZ_125_W_X_Y_Marauder/98-00/picture/Speedo_Cable/

Symptoms suggest cable. And 9/10 times speedo faults are the cable. I'd not be so quick to dismiss it.

Try finding something you can drive the speedo with off an electric drill.... I'll bet it works, and its the cable slipping.
