It depends on the reason for removing the head really, if its been overheating or had a blown headgasket then yes but if you are just stripping it to do the valves or rings etc then I wouldn't as it can effect the valve timing and compression ratio ideally you want to remove as little as possible from it to ensure it is flat.

As Jimspeed said if there hasn't been a problem leave it alone but don't forget to get it a good quality replacement head gasket.

I never did this but have read of people using grinding past on glass for slightly warped heads but I would not get it skimmed because the valves might hit the pistons and you engine is the wrecked.
1 Thousand of an inch on a bike engine is a lot compared to most cars.

I had both the head and the barrels skimmed when I did the engine on the Fazer.

Total of 7 thou removed, god knows what compression ratio the thing was running. Always used decent fuel and it went like shit off a shovel!

You won't start mashing valves into pistons dw. I'd get the head skimmed after every time it was removed.

im just going to be doing the valve stem oil seals as its using quite abit of oil.
my problem with getting it skimmed is finding where can do it as my local engineers said it would be too small to fit there machine.
suppose il have a ring round closer the time and get some prices

cheers chaps
