Its open to opinion on how long you should run in a 2-stroke engine. Some manufacturers say as much as 1000mile, but others 500mile. In some ways a two stroke should need less running in than a 4 stroke, as there are only 3 moving parts. But 2 strokes run hotter, and the lack of positive lubrication means that its vital to get a good piston to cylinder surface for long engine life and to prevent seizure. On MX bikes they sometimes say that the first tank of fuel is enough to run it in, as any longer period would detract too much life span from the piston/rings. That might well be true on a motor in that state of tune, but on a road bike i would take a bit longer. What type of cylinder does the NS have, i.e. Nickosil plated, or a steel/iron liner? I think that also makes a difference, as bikes with plated bores run closer piston to cylinder clearances than cylinders with liners fitted. I would do the first 100mile really steady, less than 1/2 throttle, and 5k rpm. Then after the first 200mile id would gradually increase throttle use and max rpm, so that by around 400-500mile you will be able to use full throttle and rev the motor out, but just occasionally, and keep your cruising speed down, but gradually work up to full performance. With experience its easy to tell when a motor is loosened up, but its even more important on a stroker not to put too much load on it for the first few hundred miles, so use the gearbox more, and never let the motor work hard in a high gear. Also its best to vary the speed, so that you dont ride everywhere at say 50mph, to let the motor get used to different loads, and speeds, instead of just crusing on a constant throttle everywhere. |
