As above really, took the rear wheel off to get a new tyre put on and noticed a bit of play behind the sprocket...

Now I've bolted it back to the bike it doesn't move at all...

Bike is a 1998 CBR 600 F3...

It should just pull off...so i'd expect a little play. not loads though.

I think they just slide onto some rubbers, cush drive rubbers (sp?)

Worn cush drive rubbers I suspect if there's loads of play, but there would be other symptoms (like abnormally clunky drive when opening the throttle).

The sprocket carrier isn't really attached to the wheel, it sits in there with the cushdrive rubbers and it's a tight enough fit to keep it in there when the wheel's out.

If you wiggle it you should be able to slide the carrier out and check the cush drive rubbers, be aware some will fall out when you do this. If all is well simply replace. If they are massively worn you can either replace the cush drive rubbers or bodge it using stripes of bicycle inner tube cut up and slotted in (although I wouldn't advise it). That said I've never needed to replace a sprocket carrier or cush drive rubbers on any of my bikes.

Short version - It's fine provided the play's not excessive.

Check the rotational movement, if its more than 5mm you'll need to replace the rubbers or pack them with rubber or tin etc..

There will always be a small amount of movement. If you have had the wheel off and now the carrier is solid against the wheel then you have probably beft out the spacer betwen the wheel bearing and carrier bearing. You better pull it off again to check coz it makes a mess if you ride it like that.

One indication is if you notice you have more thread poking through the spindle nut than you did before.

I'll double check after work, but I'm sure it doesn't have play in it like it did when it was off.

Both spacers are in the wheel, I remember cleaning them and then regreasing them and checking which way round they went in.
