How to get rid of engine 'harmonics'?

Hi. I bought my second motorbike, a 1999 Yamaha FZS600 Fazer back in January and i absolutely love it. But the one thing i would like to change about it is the harmonic sounds the engine makes. On top of the nice smooth low growl it has, it also has a light hum about two octaves higher, and then a fairly strong whistle another two octaves up. Both additional frequencies increase and decrease with the revs. It sounds like it's nuclear powered . It would be a fantastic sound, but from where i am on the bike, it sounds like the two higher noises are louder than the fundamental growl. Someone told me there was a kit i could put on to balance out the sound. Does anyone know what i should do?

im not sure if you are hearing things or that they are just normal motorbike noises, and you are just over thinking it,
there certainly isn't a "kit" to change engine noises,
there is a kit to change the exhaust noises... they call it .. end can

Depends what the bike is, some do have balancer shafts that you can alter and which can change the harmonic vibrations and thereby noise to a degree - Honda Blackbird for example.
Don't think there are that many though with DIY adjustable balancers so basically your stuck with it.

I don't know a huge amount about it's past, but it performs perfectly, and is in a damn sight better condition than the ER5 i had before of the same age. The one thing that i know i'll need to do soon is change the oil and filter, but apart from that it all seems fine. One little thing is that the rev speed at idle wobbles a little.

You know, we get a lot of people asking questions about 'tuning' thier bikes...... they dont normally mention, 'Octives' and 'pitch' unless its in relation to a chain!
I think you need to check out Super-Trapp exhausts from the states.
They have a baffle pack on the end made from a number of vent plates, which you can add more to or take ones away to change the note, and a 'slip on' clamp you can slide up and down the collector.

Its supposed to be so that on a tuned engine you can optimise the harmonics for carburation; But in your case I think it would be more like playing a bass trombone!

Sounds like you are referring to the gearbox whine.

Get a louder exhaust

Do Fazers have a piggyback alternator, the same as XJs?

Their drive mechanism contributes a high pitched whine, which you can't do anything about, other than drown it out with a louder pipe.

Could be induction noise. The sound of the air being sucked into the engine through the airbox. A different make of air filter may alter this..

Can I suggest earplugs?

All the extraeoneous noises mean is that your engine is in fine fettle. Ride it for 10 or 15 thousand miles and they will go away - or at least, you won't notice them anymore.

A lot of these 'unmechanical' noises you hear are caused by the 'clean air' stuff fitted to most modern bikes. I'm working on a Kwak ZZR600 at the moment. Up to 3K RPM it was makeing an intrusive chirping noise. On investigation, Kawa have fitted the most complex of engine breathers that include two reed valves in the rocker cover. One of the petals had split and was causing this wierd noise. Then, it also has an induction vacuum activated breather that vents into the airbox. This makes a rattling noise most noticable at slow speeds.
The simple cure is to remove the lot! Peace and quiet at last.
