ammo box panniers

Hi im thinking about grabbing a couple of ammo boxes of egay and putting them on my gs500.

What would be the best way to mount them and where abouts?

Also what kind of metal should i use to make some form of mount for them?

The metal tends to split if you just bolt them on, even with penny washers on the inside.

A bit of thin plywood on the inside of the box, with a couple of bolts and penny washers going through it to attach them to whatever rail you cobble together is good.

It's also good to have a wee bit of support from underneath if possible, even if it's only a bit of L-section for the edge nearest the bike

Petsonally I'd forget bolts and get the MIG out, but then I don't much of an excuse for a bit of welding.

Would it be good to weld them to some sort of frame / mount that then bolts to the bike ?

I can borrow a stick welded or oxycetaline welder from a mate so welding isn't a problem .

It's pretty thin, fairly springy steel they're made of. I'd worry about it splitting next to the weld (or there's a pretty good chance of blowing a hole in it depending on how good you are with a welder).

The plywood insert thing is tried and tested. You cut a piece of ply the same size as the side of the box, put it inside and bolt it on through that. Two M6 bolts with a penny washer is fine.

Another top tip for ammo boxes is to drill a small hole between two of the hinge sections and put a pop-rivett through it with the flat side on the inside of the box and the 'popped' part to the outside. This prevents the lid sliding sideways and coming off the hinge pins every time you open it.

mybe something similar would work for you maybe not exactly but why not make a support frame up out of thin metal plates then mount the boxes inside

also what exact model do you have cause the bike i found it dosent suit the look idk maybe you have a older one or a more millitary looking one

As billing said, ive got some on my SH.

Bolted on using small exhaust brackets bolted round the frame tube, or in my case, rear grab rail / rack. Bolted inside with washers.
I havent had a problem yet, been on for a while carrying tools/spares/sandwiches etc. Ive even used them to support the bike when i had to lay it over.

Seriously, they do split.

Takes a wee while but they go eventually.

Here's one I fitted using 1 1/2" penny washers on the inside of the box. It was on my CB125 for about 6 months and eventually this happened. Caught it happening before it fell off entirely though.

I just use that one as a toolbox now.

Got a thin piece of ally running between the 2 holes in the centre of each box, then bolted onto the top box rails with some chunky iron brakets used as spacers, then to stop any flex I aquired 2 lengths of 8mm Stainless threaded and a bag of 8mm bolts and a few nylock nuts, run the bar through existing holes in the corners of the boxes and and wound on the nuts to sandwich either side of each face of the boxes. Then just bodged up some brackets to run down to the pillion root rests to take some of the force forward.
