First Problem......

So, here's how it goes...... Bought my first bike a few weeks ago, ordered a Motad Venom Exhaust and fitted it today. First ride round the block and "Tada!!" - the speedo doesn't work!? Seconding this, the RED "FI" light comes on, then starts flashing.....ok, so I ride home and turn engine off (The bike is still running fine). Had a look around bike to see if there's any loose connection that are obvious to the eye - not a sausage. Tried bike again, speedo working and RED "FI" light not on...... hmmmmmmmm

Is this a pure co-incidence that this has happened as the Exhaust has been changed or is the exhaust causing issues with my electronics!?? I'm not a complete "dim whit" am I? Only I was pretty darn certain that there was no link between burnt fuel gasses going through a metal pipe and electric cables that are nowhere near each other!!!!!

Have tried to replicate the problem and now it won't do it - I mean I know that's a good thing for now, but what caused it and am I going to have problems in the near future? I.e. Is a sensor slowly dieing on me!?

BTW the bike is a 2008 Honda CBF600n with Fuel Injection not carb.

Anyone else ever had this problem?

Problem is defiantly intermittent.......Have phone exhaust manufacturer and they have confirmed that this is nothing to do with the exhaust being fitted. So, I guess it's a dodgy sensor......

Can anyone enlighten to the guilty culprit!?

Have you got the handbook/manual?, the fault codes are in there. On a Honda you count the FI light flashes, long one = 10, short one = 1, if it's an ongoing problem it will keep repeating the code, if it's reset itself then there is a block you short out to access the fault memory and again count the flashes. Dunno exactly where the block is on your bike, you need the manual for that and to tell you what the code number means.

Does the CBF use an old CBR engine by any chance? I had a similar problem on my CBR and I ended up changing the speed sensor.


There will be a service connector somewhere that you can bridge and read the FI code. It will be something along the lines of speed sensor or wiring fault if it is what I think it is.


The speed sensor is a little electromagnetic pickup in the crankcase, honda can't seem to make them (or cam chain tensioners) for toffee. If access is good then swapping them is VERY easy.

Thanks for your help DonnyBrago & Bezzer - It was indeed the speed sensor that was causing the problem and indeed it is an old CBR engine - a detuned version that is! Cheers guys.
