Afternoon

Just got home to find what looked like a small piece of metal embedded in my back tyre. I probably should have left it alone but I pulled it out and it was actually a inch nail at an angle.

There doesn't seem to be a puncture but I realise it might be slow so I could find a flat tyre in the morning. If it's not flat later on should I assume all is ok or could this have caused a 'weak' spot in the tyre?

I don't mind buying a new one but if i dont need to I don't want to waste money, the tyre's only covered 200 miles.

I'd check in the morning to be sure. Put some water over the hole and see if it bubbles.

You reckon if there's no sign of air leaking in the morning it'll be safe to ride on? I'm just thinking if it was close to going all the way through riding on it might finish it off?

i had exactly the same thing happen to me last week, went through at an angle but was about 2 inches long, i've got no idea how it didnt go through but im still using it and it's fine.

depending on the size of the tyre i may be interested in buying it off you if you didnt feel confident keeping it, i have a pretty low standard of personal safety and not a lot of money so i dont mind taking the risk

The tyre's a 180/55 BT014 but hang fire I'll see what it's like in the morning.

I can see me being dubious about using it though, I'd be pretty gutted if I binned the bike for the sake of a new tyre.

the actual carcass of the tyre keeps the air in, not the tread, as long as the inner membrane that holds the air hasn't been punctured or slit then you're good to go.

...or so a bike tyre place told me.

Well I've checked with some water and there was zero bubbles so hopefully the nail didn't go through. I'll leave it for the night and see if the pressure's dropped in the morning.

Yep, similar story here too. Looked like a blunt piece of nail which was long enough to make me concerned that I would have a puncture when I pulled it out. However, three weeks of tyre checking and everything is still ok. Glad to read about the inner membrane explanation as it's clear it didn't go all the way in. After taking it steady I'm now doing my normal speeds.

A thing to bear in mind. A cut in a tyre can hold dirt. Dirt/grit can make the cut deeper/bigger. Cyclists often get more punctures in the wet when the grit gets a chance to work it's way in.

I had a nail go through a 2 week old tyre on friday, plugged it there and then and got on my way.
1000 miles later and it's still up and been doing some silly speeds on it.
I got some mushrooms here to fix it but thinking i'll just leave it be since there is only another couple of weeks on it and it's not losing any pressure
