I start a new job this month, and because I've left school, my mum will no longer receive tax credits etc, so it's time for me to start paying my way.
After tax, I should be getting around £600 a month.
How much should I be paying her a month in rent?

Obviously thats the first thing I did. Neutral Why do you think I've posted on here?
She doesn't know how much. I was just trying to find out if their is a common percentage/amount that people pay.

Next time, don't bother if all you're going to do is give pointless advice.

Going rate for one bed room in a shared house in my area starts from £350 per month might be worth seeing how much they are in your area and work it out from there.

As an aside, you might be better off moving out and claiming all the extra handouts that come out of my taxes. I hope you don't, but I don't see why every other sponging cockholster and scally should benefit from it and not you.

She worked out that with all the tax credits and child benefit she'll lose, she'll be about £200 a month worse off.

She worked out that with all the tax credits and child benefit she'll lose, she'll be about £200 a month worse off.

So at £55 she will be £20 better off, go for that.

Room in a shared house is £300+ in most parts. Your share of the bills, food etc probably comes in at another £80 on top, so anything less than that lot is fair. I'd say 150 a month would be nice.

When I lived at home and paid lodge I paid £8/week - just over a third of my income.

I think that makes me old Smile

This. In fact, that's how much benefit my parents lost when I was living at home.

This is what I pay my old dear a month while I'm in uni (it's only 20mins away so it was pointless me moving out).

Me and my siblings also paid a third when we started work. Some people thought it was extortionate, but if I could have my accommodation, food, washing, gas, electricity, water, phone, tv, and housekeeping all sorted leaving me with 2/3rds of my income as disposable funny money I'd jump at the chance Smile

The guy I work with earns around £2,000 a month after tax and he only pays £120, and he gets two roast dinners every day Laughing Cushy.

I'm going to sound like a cunt here, but if you take home £660 a month that's only 26 hours a week at minimum wage.

The fact that she is going to lose benefits means she can't have that much to herself anyway, you need to get another part time job and pay your Mum more than she looses in benefits so she can have a few treats for herself.

She gave birth to you, she raised you and now it's time to give something back. If she refuses to take more money you need to make sure you get her enough extra stuff to make up for the money she won't take as rent.

Man Up, you're a big boy now.

Unfortunately, being stuck with the mother after I split up with the girlfriend I was going to move in with I pay a quarter of my salary. I have done since I started work. Thats about bang on for a shared house or shitty flat/bedsit, minus bills. Also chip in with food etc and she drinks all my booze.

Any less would be nice but taking the piss somewhat, it still gives me plenty to put away for a deposit on a house at some point.... or rather to fund my extravagant lifestyle.

Actually it's £600 a month (after tax) for 37 hours a week.

I completely agree with what you're saying.
I used to ask her for money all the time, before I got a part time job.
I do feel like I owe her a lot.

I think I'll give her £200 a month. A third of my salary.
I'll be helping out a bit around the house as well (the dishes and hoovering etc).

I was thinking about giving her less, but you've just reminded me how much she has done for me over the years and how I should start paying her back.

Thanks for that kick up the backside 95theses. Thumbs Up

You Sir have just restored a bit of my faith in humanity!

And from a purely selfish point of view, think how good it will feel to have your Mum be proud of you for thinking of Her and not yourself Very Happy
