In theory the higher grades are meant to be backwards compatible (with SF and SG being obsolete).
In practice some of the newer grades have limited the amounts of some rather useful additives which are harmful to catalytic converters.. Further some of the oils with newer grades contain friction modifiers that some wet clutches object to.
To a large extent it comes down to the particular oil you use. I have certainly used SJ oils before.
