Low sided my bike yesterday in the wet, must have hit oil or diesel because the front just washed out with no braking. Anyway, I smashed down at about 25mph onto my denim covered knee and leg which got knocked and dragged along the road.

Bit of road rash all up my leg and the aching last night was pretty bad but obviously not broken because I could just about walk on it.

Today however my knee joint is so stiff it is insane. I can't really get to a hospital or doctors without riding at the moment and the internet isn't much help. It is all red and just hurts every time I try to move it and no matter where I put it, it aches lots. Have I damaged something or is this just normal post crash aching?

ligaments round the knee could be fucked, now im putting my neck out for this one but may I suggest a lift to your local A&E department to let a proper doctor check it out for you and sort an xray etc.

Adrenaline and shock can last hours, hence why you could 'just about walk on it' last night.

Get to your A+E asap mate. Better safe than sorry.

I won't be able to go till tomorrow at this rate.

I have been doing lots of reading and cartilage damage seems like a possibility which just means a bit of awkwardness for a while until it heals.

Could just be due to inflamation. In the mean time support your leg and try an ice pack.

But you should get it checked out at A&E.

Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.... Take ibuprofen in addition to paracetamol.

Could be anything from ligament damage to a cracked patella.

A+E is the way to go, but doing the above will make it a bit more bearable..

You should get a job in medicine then. Most orthopaedic specialists need to take an x-ray to see if something is or is not broken and there's you able to tell just by looking.

Slightly less facetious reply: There are degrees of broken and it would be wrong to assume it isn't just because you are weight bearing.

It's not broken, but it might be fractured i.e. chipped or cracked even slightly. This might not result in the immediate pain and swelling that you'd get from a break, but could lead to what you're talking about.

I know that but it isn't that sort of pain. I imagine they will x ray it tomorrow.

Seriously take a taxi..

Some injuries if you don't get them looked at can result in minor disability if you don't get it seen to.

Hip and knee injuries for example they hurt and the bones can fuse back together themselves in a manner which causes minor disability. A skydiver had a similar PLF a few months ago. He could walk on it and didn't bother going to get it seen to. Some of the bones fused in strange way.... he is medically declared unfit to jump again..... he has to travel to the USA and lie about his medical records to be allowed to jump now.

I wandered around for a couple of days with a broken shoulder, still using my arm.
Didn't feel much different to another time later when I had similar but a bit worse pain, but no break that time.

Know quite a few people that have hurt hands, insisted they are fine; then found they were actually broken when they went to A&E.
So always worth getting checked out Thumbs Up.

Also, when I went with my shoulder, I rode there, but was told I wasn't allowed to ride home, which was irksome; had to get my bike picked up by someone else.

You prefer people to just go with their original assumption, which in this case was to just ignore it and hope it goes away?

Don't take the bike.... Should it be broken, how are you going to get it home...... And hospitals are not the best place to leave a bike...

Lass at work hurt her thumb playing hockey. After 2 weeks it still hurt, so she drives to hospital....
Result a pot that went from her fingers passed her elbow.
Took 3 days before she could arange anyone to go and retrieve her car.

3 days at hospital parking rates? She must've needed a mortgage!

I did some work up at Heartlands hospital in Brum a few years ago, one of the senior staff there commented on how the carpark was one of their biggest sources of revenue. I can't remember the exact figure, but it was in millions.

Shocked

Of course not, I just cant understand it when people think 'my leg hurts after falling off my bike...what should I do? I know, ask on a forum'...

Should've seen their faces in the orthopaedic out patients department when I was sat there with my bike helmet and a pot on my left arm.

There was some discussion with the registrar about the dire consequences of falling off said motorcycle. I voiced the oppinion that I would still have a broken arm either way.

We then had a further discussion about the realities of travelling 45 miles to attend their clinic from a remote rural location for an 8.30am appointment then not being seen before 11am. If my appointment had been for 11am, I could have caught a bus meaning I'd have only been riding my bike for 3 miles. Our conversation revealed they only make two appointment times. 8.30am and 1.30pm (yes folks, they make everyone an 8.30 appointment and don't see some of them until 12.30 when they knock off for lunch. God bless the NHS and all who sail in her) and that if I turned up at 11am for the next one, it wouldn't be a problem.

Ironically, they were quite happy for me to drive my car home when I was in with gout, despite me being almost totally unable to move my left foot and certainly not functional enough to adequately work the clutch (used my right foot for most changes unless moving away and used my left heel for that).

Re. broken bones. As long as there aren't other complications such as compromised blood supply, you have a good 6 days to do something with a broken bone before you run into problems.

I spent the best part of 15 mins trying to find a parking space at Heartlands for my first visit to my consultant and failed so I parked half a mile away and ran to make the appointment. Ever other visit has been made on foot, the two mile walk helps build muscle.
