I think it's about time I got my driving license sorted, I did a few lessons a while back but then I got my bike license so I stopped
I'm thinking of doing one of those one week intensive courses the same way I did my bike test (except that was only 3 or 4 days) or should I just do the normal way of one or two lessons a week? Which is better ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

I would ask....
How confident were you at driving before quiting and sticking with the bike.
If very confident, then get the theory out of the way and book a short course of lessons. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

I started to 'learning' to drive in march - been doing 3/4 hours a week (so thats £70/80 w)
Cut down to 2 hours a week (in a single sitting) and was as happier with that. Not just because of the money, but it gave me more to time to think about and let what i'v learned sink in. I have my test next month, and feel like it'l be fine.
As you'v been driving a bike, your road sense will be fine, The only thing that would be different it space judgement, and the controls! Oh, and don't do a life saver every time you turn in a car, i get the urge to EVERY TIME - and i'v only done 3 hours on a bike ____________________ 2007 YBR 125 (sold), 2011 ER6-N (sold), LHD 1999 GSX750F (sold), ??? ??? |

Hmm interesting, when I did it before I did 1 or 2 lessons a week which were 1 to 2 hours long.
I'm not sure if it's even worth it because I can't get insured on anything! I suppose it's good just to get it out of the way ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

I find 1 hour lessons kinda of pointless :/ You just get in the car, do a tiny bit, then go home. Kinda learning something but not practicing.
1.5/2 hour lessons seem about right for me. Although 2 of those a week was TOO much money, and made me drive worse xD ____________________ 2007 YBR 125 (sold), 2011 ER6-N (sold), LHD 1999 GSX750F (sold), ??? ??? |

I just took 6 hour long lessons then took my test. I failed though. I booked 1 more lesson and test combo and failed again. Then I booked another single lesson and test combo and passed. It was cheaper to fail a couple of tests than have the 20 odd lessons they wanted to sell me.
There were mitigating circumstances for my first fail but the second was probably my fault. At least, I blamed myself as I rounded a bend on a piece of dual-carriageway, doing a healthy 60mph, to see a massive sign proclaiming, "YOU ARE STILL IN A 30MPH LIMIT".
You can learn on a test but you can't pass on a lesson. ____________________ Greetings from Shitsville! |

I basically taught myself, in a family member's car, using the DSA hand book. Passed first time. I did the test in a Passat.
Driving instructers, an dthe driving instruction industry, will convince you that learning to drive is a "big challenge". It isn't. If you've a little road sense, and a little common sense, it's actually a piece of piss. |
This is probably pretty close to the truth. I wouldn't waste money on loads of lessons. Get through it short and sweet like the bike test, as said above: it's cheaper to fail a couple of times and learn from it than to have endless expensive lessons. I had about 8 lessons, 2 hours each, and passed. The skill of driving a car comes quickly enough, the rest is common sense tbh. ____________________ Rides Honda CB500S aka "The Orange Peril" |

it's ok saying 'so what if you fail a few times'. some people (myself included) cant stand to fail at anything, im so bad that i wont even compete or do anything that im not likely to suceed in and if i do fail my confidence plumets. ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125

Driving lessons are only worthwhile if you find the right instructor!
It depends on your ability, but you most probably wont be wanting to have a 30+ hour course.. and today we are going to be 'Moving off and stopping..' 'But I already know how to...'
'Well we must follow the course, '
'GTFO'
In the end I found a really nice guy and had 12 lessons with 2 before the test to brush up, most of my learning - controls etc was with my dad in my car, job done ____________________ 07' Honda Hornet now full powaah! My guide on performing an oil change! |
